Heukmaneul Boribap is a barley rice set-meal restaurant inside Gugyeong Market in Danyang, Chungbuk. A Saturday lunch visit was given up on after more than 20 groups were already waiting, but arriving for the 10:00 opening the next day, Sunday, meant walking straight in to a table of black garlic barley rice, black garlic boiled pork and doenjang stew. For a weekend meal at Heukmaneul Boribap, being there when the doors open at 10:00 was the surest plan.

The writer picked the 4-piece combo set of cream cheese, black garlic cream cheese, sweet garlic and sweet potato and packed two boxes as a gift for both mothers, who love black garlic, and found the bread crisp outside and moist with cream cheese inside. Sundays fill up with customers buying several boxes at once, so Saturday is the faster day to visit if you plan to eat right away.
