These days, Danyang's Gugyeong Market is an absolute must on any Danyang trip itinerary, right? Even among all the food stalls packed into the market, there's one place that's been buzzing on social media and word of mouth lately with people saying "the wait here is seriously long." Honestly, before visiting I thought, "barley rice is barley rice, how special can it be?"

But after actually going, I immediately understood why everyone lines up for it and why it's ranked as a Danyang must-eat!

An honest review of Danyang's black garlic barley rice, which nails both healthiness and savory depth — let me walk through it now.

That said, since this is a market, the alleys can get congested, so for peace of mind I'd recommend using the free public parking lot at Gugyeong Market. The parking space is spacious and it's a perfect walking distance while browsing the market!

Saturday fail, Sunday 10:00 success: how to skip the wait

On Saturday, the first day of our trip, we showed up excited for lunch, but…

Unbelievably, there were already more than 20 teams waiting! The estimated wait was at least an hour, so after some back and forth we made a decision.

Let's come back early tomorrow morning!

The next day, Sunday, we did what's known as an "opening run," timing our arrival for the 10am opening. The result: we walked straight in, no problem! But don't get too comfortable — within 15 minutes of us sitting down, all 12 tables were full, and a line quickly started forming outside the restaurant. If you're planning a weekend visit, I strongly recommend showing up right at the 10am opening.

What is the inside of Heukmaneul Boribap like?

Since it's a restaurant tucked inside a market, I expected a cozy, old-school feel, but I was surprised that the interior was much larger and cleaner than expected.

There were about 12 tables set up, each seating 4. What impressed me especially was how they handled group guests.

Many groups arrived after making reservations, and the staff efficiently combined tables on the spot to fit everyone.

The tables were also spaced generously apart, so we could focus comfortably on our meal without feeling crowded by neighboring tables.

Overall the place felt clean and hygienic, which made me think it'd be a great spot to bring parents or kids along.

Finally, the moment we'd been waiting for — the table setting!

Looking at the menu, the main dish was a barley rice set meal built around Danyang's specialty ingredient, black garlic! I really liked the concept of a wholesome meal made with healthy local specialties.

As the side dishes were laid out one by one on the table, you could feel the care put into it just from the look of it.

Colorful seasonal namul (seasoned vegetable) side dishes and neat banchan filled the table.

The barley rice had just the right amount of chewiness and fluffiness, making it perfect for mixing with the namul.

The popping texture of the barley rice really elevated the flavor of the bibimbap. The highlight of the meal!

The distinctively deep, mild sweetness and pungency of the black garlic had soaked into the meat, leaving it tender with no gamey smell at all.

It wasn't heavily seasoned, yet had this refined flavor that kept me reaching for more.

The doenjang (soybean paste) stew that came bubbling hot had a deep, rich broth that was the real kicker. Taking a spoonful in between bites of the bibimbap — which can get a bit heavy — was a perfectly matched combo.

My palate, worn out from instant food and spicy delivery meals, felt completely reset. A whole bowl of rice disappeared in the blink of an eye!

Who will enjoy Heukmaneul Boribap in Danyang's Gugyeong Market?

If you want a meal that's not overly seasoned but still healthy and filling, I strongly recommend this Danyang Gugyeong Market favorite, Heukmaneul Boribap.

Just note that these days the wait can get long, so plan your visit with some buffer time. Wandering the market while you wait turns out to be a fun part of the trip in itself!
