Ansan buckwheat noodle house with its own stone mill: Memilchon

In short

Memilchon Ansan (메밀촌) is a pure buckwheat makguksu (chilled buckwheat noodles) and suyuk (boiled pork) restaurant on Songho 1-gil in Sangnok-gu, Ansan, Gyeonggi. On a summer date in Ansan, we ordered perilla oil makguksu and bibim makguksu at 12,000 won each plus a small suyuk for 25,000 won, all with pure buckwheat noodles stone-ground in Memilchon Ansan's in-house noodle mill. Rolling the bibim makguksu up in the boiled pork was the most satisfying bite of the meal.

On the day of our date in Ansan, it was summer and I didn't feel like anything hot. I wanted something cool but still filling. Then boiled pork with makguksu (buckwheat noodles) popped into my head, so we headed to Memilchon in Ansan🙌🏻

Memilchon Ansan: location, parking and opening hours

Memilchon Ansan is at 73 Songho 1-gil, Sangnok-gu, Ansan, on the 1st floor, a 10-minute walk from Exit 2 of Handaeap Station on Line 4. It's open daily 11:00–20:30, except for its regular closing day on Tuesdays.

There is parking in front of the shop, but it's a bit tight! A lot of people park in the empty lots nearby.

Memilchon is already a pretty famous restaurant in Ansan! When we visited there were lots of older guests, and once lunch peak hit, customers kept streaming in. Seeing that only raised my expectations. It has also been featured on TV several times.

  • Appeared on KBS 2TV's Saengsaeng Jeongbo, episode 623
  • Appeared on Today's Gyeongin World, episode 20
  • Selected as one of 5 must-visit restaurants in Ansan

There seems to be a reason so many people come here.

Atmosphere and seating

The inside of Memilchon Ansan was spacious and pleasant. They use the 2nd floor as well as the 1st. It looked more than big enough for a family meal or a group gathering.

The in-house noodle mill and stone-ground pure buckwheat

What impressed me most about Memilchon is that there's a buckwheat noodle mill right inside the restaurant!! So the makguksu isn't made from flour delivered from a factory. They hull the buckwheat themselves in the shop and stone-grind 100% pure buckwheat.

Ordinary roller milling generates a lot of frictional heat, but since buckwheat is sensitive to heat, Memilchon says it uses the traditional stone-mill method. That keeps the buckwheat's own aroma and flavor intact in the flour. Seeing the noodle mill with my own eyes made me trust it, and got me excited for the food.

They were also running a Naver review event. If you write a review, you draw for a prize: 1st prize is a ₩50,000 Shinsegae gift certificate, 2nd is crispy-outside, chewy-inside potato pancakes, and 3rd is a 4-pack of Teumsaesol. With a department store gift certificate as first prize, it's worth joining in after your meal, haha

Memilchon menu listing makguksu, boiled pork and potato ongsimi

The menu is makguksu, suyuk (boiled pork), gamja ongsimi (potato dumpling soup) and jeon (savory pancakes), so there's something for every age~! Makguksu comes in three types, mul (cold broth), bibim (spicy-mixed) and perilla oil, so you can pick by taste, haha

What we ordered and prices

This time we ordered perilla oil makguksu (₩12,000), bibim makguksu (₩12,000) and a small boiled pork (₩25,000).

Side dishes and warm buckwheat tea come out first. My boyfriend had been having stomach trouble for a while... and he said the buckwheat tea seemed to settle his stomach. I took a sip too, and the nutty aroma was really lovely☺️

Perilla oil makguksu ₩12,000

Soon the main dishes we'd been waiting for arrived~ First, the perilla oil makguksu. With the first bite, the nutty perilla oil aroma filled my mouth. With the buckwheat fragrance and the tangy pickled radish strips on top, it tasted light yet deeply flavorful. Personally, I think the perilla oil makguksu is best eaten on its own rather than with other dishes😋

Memilchon bibim makguksu with the sauce mixed in

Bibim makguksu ₩12,000

Next, the bibim makguksu. If you like spicy mixed noodles, you'll love this! The sauce blends well with the buckwheat noodles and has great savory depth, so my chopsticks kept going back. This one is best paired with the boiled pork✨ Rolling the bibim makguksu up in the pork was delicious🤤 I highly recommend ordering the bibim makguksu and boiled pork together👏🏻

Small boiled pork ₩25,000

The boiled pork was better than I expected too. It was glossy and moist with a tender texture, and I'm usually sensitive to gamey smells in meat, but there was none at all! There was only a faint herbal medicinal note, never overpowering, so it was mild and clean-tasting. It was good with the radish kimchi served alongside, but personally the best way was eating it together with the bibim makguksu.
