Where is Danppang Bakery and when is it open?

Danppang Bakery (단빵제빵소) is a garlic bread shop inside Gugyeong Market in Danyang, open every day from 10:30 to 21:00. For parking, use the public parking lot nearby.

I went to this Gugyeong Market favorite in Danyang to buy a garlic bread set as a Danyang souvenir. It's right across from Danyang Black Garlic Nurungji Chicken Gangjeong (단양흑마늘누룽지닭강정), so you can pick up garlic bread and fried chicken in one go, haha.

How long is the Danppang Bakery wait if you split the line with the chicken shop?

You do have to wait at Danppang, but if there are two of you, one can stand in the bakery line and the other in the chicken line across the street and save time. Of course, that line is a wait too, haha. A popular spot always means waiting, so you just accept it.

While my husband stood in line at Danppang, I bought the chicken at Danyang Black Garlic Nurungji Chicken Gangjeong. The timing came out about the same, haha.

Why does Danyang's Gugyeong Market have so many garlic dishes?

Almost every popular place in Gugyeong Market serves something with garlic, and this is where you see why Danyang garlic is so famous, haha. It's the original six-clove garlic (yukjjok maneul)!!

They say Danyang garlic is much sweeter than regular garlic and has a deep flavor all its own. It also grows in the loess fields of a limestone region, so it's firm, and it's said to be rich in allicin, which is good for fighting cancer and chronic diseases.

Inside Danppang Bakery: the atmosphere and how orders are packed

The inside of Danppang is packed with garlic bread, and the staff bake the bread, fill it with cream and box it up by type. There's garlic bread everywhere in the shop. Bread keeps baking both inside and outside, and the staff whip up cream and pipe it in so fast that it all feels incredibly organized, haha.

They put one of each finished bread into a box, and when it's all done you pick it up, haha. Almost everyone buys the 4-flavor set, and some people buy several boxes each. I guess that's because it's perfect as a Danyang souvenir.

See the stack of black packing boxes in the back? Those boxes disappear within minutes, get stacked again, disappear again, haha. It's really busy.

Still, the staff work incredibly fast, so we didn't have to wait long to get our order.

Is the Danppang Bakery 4-flavor set a good gift?

The Danppang 4-flavor set (₩14,000) holds one of each of four garlic breads per box, which makes it perfect as a gift. Ta-da~ just looking at it makes me happy.

I was thinking of buying just the plain garlic bread, but I got the set instead, and for gifts this really is the one, haha.

Crispy baguette garlic bread (₩3,900)

The crispy-outside, soft-inside baguette garlic bread is Danppang's basic item, filled with sweet garlic sauce and minced garlic instead of cream.

You know the original is always good, right?? The garlic sauce is savory and sweet, so I'd recommend it as a snack for kids, haha.

Sweet potato custard garlic bread (₩4,300): the writer's No. 1

The sweet potato custard garlic bread is packed with sweet potato and custard filling. If you like sweet things, get this one, haha. It's really sweet and soft, and goes well with coffee.

The soft, moist custard cream is really sweet, and you can bite into pieces of sweet potato, which makes it a feel-good flavor. This is my No. 1 and the plain one is No. 2, haha.

Cream cheese garlic bread (₩4,300)

Danppang's cream cheese garlic bread is thick and dense, the opposite of the custard, so it has its own charm.

It's plain cream cheese with a garlic aroma, so the flavor is rich. If you like cream cheese, try this one too, haha.

Black garlic cream cheese garlic bread (₩4,300)

At first glance the black garlic cream cheese garlic bread didn't appeal to me, maybe because of the color, or because I assumed it was black garlic cream, but once I tried it, it was sweet, moist and delicious, haha. It's the most moist and sweet after the custard, so it's great with coffee too!

If you're looking for a Danyang souvenir, I'd recommend the garlic bread set from Danppang, a Gugyeong Market favorite. Every garlic bread was good and each type has its own charm, so I think people receiving it will love it. The price isn't a burden either, so give it a visit!
