Dementia prevention book on brain science and home design: Neuroterior

In short

Neuroterior (Neuroterior) is a Korean book by Son Hyeju that links brain science with interior and space design, explaining how the home and neighborhood you spend every day in can affect memory and life in old age. The blogger read Neuroterior in a café, checked the lighting and movement paths in their parents' home along the way, and came away with new criteria for choosing a neighborhood to live in later in life. Neuroterior turns difficult brain science into easy reading through case studies and illustrations, making it a worthwhile general-interest book for anyone preparing for a healthy old age.

What kind of book is Neuroterior?

Neuroterior explains, with brain-science evidence, how the spaces we live in every day can affect memory, cognitive function, and even life in old age. Of the books I've read lately, it offered the freshest perspective. I've always been interested in brain science, but it had never occurred to me that it could connect with interior and space design, which is why I found it so fascinating!

It felt so good to spend time reading in a café for the first time in a while, haha ❤️

📖 The line on the cover of Neuroterior, "What if the space you change in your 40s decides your memory in your 70s?", had me hooked before I even started reading. When people talk about dementia prevention, most of us think of exercise, diet, or reading habits first, but Neuroterior treats the space we stay in every day as the starting point for prevention.

How is the table of contents of Neuroterior organized?

Table of contents page of Neuroterior

The table of contents has 5 parts in total, starting from the brain's resilience and widening its scope to the home, community spaces, and the neighborhood.

  • Part 1. Finding the key to resilience in our brains
  • Part 2. How does the world feel to them?

  • Part 3. A home-space prescription that fits the age of your brain
  • Part 4. A community-space prescription that saves everyone's brain

  • Part 5. What kind of neighborhood lets your brain age healthily?

Part 5 was the most interesting: my criteria for choosing a neighborhood changed

That's the structure, and personally Part 5 of Neuroterior was the most interesting to me! I used to think it didn't matter where I lived in the future, but after reading this book I thought, no way, it totally matters, I really have to choose where I live carefully. Good air and a place where I can have healthy social activities with other people: those are now my criteria, haha.

What do lighting, color, and walking routes at home have to do with brain health?

Body text page of Neuroterior

Neuroterior explains that lighting, color, furniture layout, and walking routes at home are not just about everyday convenience; they can stimulate the brain and help maintain health. It felt a little unfamiliar at first, but as I read on it was quite convincing. 🧠✨ This explanation especially stood out to me: if I used to think only making a home look pretty mattered, I've newly realized that creating a healthy space matters just as much.

Is it easy to read if you don't know brain science?

Neuroterior breaks down difficult brain science so that general readers can understand it easily, and that was what I liked most. 👍 It covers Alzheimer's and dementia, but it isn't hard like a specialist book; it's explained through case studies, so I could read it without pressure. I think even people who've never been interested in medicine or brain science can read it comfortably.

After reading Neuroterior, I checked my parents' home

🏠 What came to mind most while reading Neuroterior was the look of our own home. I wondered whether the spaces I'm used to using every day are actually structured in a way that helps brain health. In particular, I naturally started thinking about the spaces my parents' generation lives in. I wanted to check whether the lighting is too dim, whether the walking routes are convenient, and whether the environment gives them the right amount of stimulation in daily life. While reading, I also contacted my parents and checked a few things 😃

Dementia prevention starts at home, not at the hospital

What makes Neuroterior special is that it doesn't see dementia merely as a disease to be treated at a hospital. 💡 I found it very impressive that it sees dementia prevention as starting not at the hospital but at the home where we live every day. It gave a lot of realistic advice, showing that even small changes, without a grand remodel or big spending, can have a positive effect.

A book that gives hope instead of anxiety

😊 I also liked that the overall mood of Neuroterior doesn't stir up too much anxiety. Books about dementia or aging often emphasize fear, but Neuroterior instead delivers the hopeful message that "you can still prepare plenty, starting now." Thanks to that, I felt positive motivation rather than pressure the whole way through!

I also liked that there are things we can put into practice right now. Meeting a friend for a chat, reading a new book, learning something unfamiliar: we can totally do those today!

Is it an interior design book or a health book?

🌿 I think Neuroterior is not just an interior design book but a health book and a general-interest book. As average life expectancy keeps rising in modern society, interest in how to age healthily is growing too. The fresh perspective of combining space design with brain science kept things interesting throughout, and I think the way I look at my home will change a lot from now on. It was also much easier to understand because everything is neatly organized with illustrations!

Who would I recommend Neuroterior to?

📚 I'd recommend Neuroterior not only to people interested in interiors, but also to grown children worried about their parents' health, middle-aged readers preparing for retirement, and anyone interested in preventing dementia. It reads smoothly with nothing too difficult, yet gives you plenty to think about. While reading, I also nagged my parents a lot about their health, haha.

Finished brain-science interior book Neuroterior

✨ Neuroterior is not simply a book on how to decorate your home prettily; it's a meaningful book about how space affects our memory, our health, and our future lives. After closing it, I found myself looking around my home once more, and I thought again about how small changes can change the future. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to prepare for a healthy old age. 💕📖🧠🏠✨
