Hongdae pasta spot by Book Street: solo basil shrimp oil set, Pasta Go

In short

Pasta Go Hongdae Branch is a budget pasta and pizza restaurant in an alley near Gyeongui Line Book Street, an 8-minute walk from Hongik Univ. Station in Mapo, Seoul. For a solo lunch, the writer ordered the one-person set with a mild basil shrimp oil pasta, 2 slices of gorgonzola pizza on the side and a Coke Zero; tucking the pasta into the dinner roll and dipping the salty pizza in honey both worked well. Pasta Go Hongdae Branch is less a mood-setting date spot than a cheap, easy choice for a quick solo pasta meal in Hongdae.

Inside Pasta Go Hongdae: is it good for eating alone?

Pasta Go Hongdae Branch is a small restaurant on the 2nd floor of a little building tucked into an alley, which you'll spot as you follow the Gyeongui Line Book Street from Hongik Univ. Station. 🚇

🪑 The dining room isn't big and has a simple feel, so it was a good space for solo diners coming for pasta, or small groups who want a quiet meal.

I took a window seat and got that ✨Hongdae alley vibe outside! I guess this is why people come to Hongdae🥰

How to build the Pasta Go solo set

📝 My order was the solo set: Bapongswi (basil shrimp pasta, "bapongswi" for short) in oil sauce, gorgonzola pizza, and Coke Zero.

Solo set spread with basil shrimp oil pasta and gorgonzola pizza

I ordered the ☝🏻solo set and chose 🍝 basil shrimp oil pasta (+₩1,800) and 🍕 gorgonzola pizza (+₩1,500). When you go solo for pasta, you often wonder whether you can handle a side like pizza too because of the portion size 🤔 so I loved that the solo set is built for exactly that 👍🏻

Basil shrimp oil pasta (Bapongswi): how does it taste?

A plate of basil shrimp oil pasta

🍝 The basil shrimp pasta comes with a choice of oil or cream sauce. Honestly the basil cream pasta looked tastier, but I've gained so much weight lately 😭 so to ease my conscience a little (?) I went with the basil oil pasta.

Choosing the mild option out of 3 spice levels

🌶️ The basil shrimp pasta also has 3 spice levels, and I played it safe with the not-spicy-at-all option. It's sprinkled with red powder, but there was no heat whatsoever.

It was loaded with 🦐 cocktail shrimp and 🍄 plump mushrooms.

🦐 Shrimp pasta with 🌿 basil flavor, what more is there to say. Choosing the oil version kept it from being heavy, so I never got tired of it and finished it cleanly.

Free morning bun option with basil pasta

Stuffing basil pasta into the free dinner roll

The 🍞 morning bun (a soft dinner roll) with a strong butter aroma is a free option, and you get 1 if you choose it. I split the bun in half and stuffed the basil pasta inside, and the butter flavor with the basil oil pasta was surprisingly good.

Gorgonzola pizza side: how many slices, and is it good?

2 slices of gorgonzola pizza as the solo set side

The solo set's side options were 🍟 fries and 🍕 pizza, and I picked the 🧀 gorgonzola pizza! (There were also sweet potato and pepperoni pizzas.) Since it's a side, I assumed I'd get 1 slice, but I got a whole 2 slices, so it was more food than I expected 🫢

A slice of gorgonzola pizza topped with cheese

The taste has a strong, salty 🧀 cheese flavor. You can't expect the quality of gorgonzola pizza from a proper pizzeria, but as a side to go with pasta, it was plenty good 👍🏻

Gorgonzola pizza dipped in honey

I thought the cheese was salty, but dipped in 🍯 honey it balanced out perfectly?!

Verdict: Pasta Go Hongdae Branch for a solo pasta lunch

  • A Hongdae pasta place with a varied, cheap menu
  • A Western restaurant for pasta and pizza that works for solo diners
  • A budget pasta spot with dine-in and takeout discounts
  • A Western restaurant with pasta-plus-pizza set menus
  • A good solo lunch spot near the Gyeongui Line Book Street
