Ikseon-dong bakery with tough parking: onion bagel to go, Munhwa

In short

Munhwa Bakery is a hanok-style, takeout-only bakery in the Ikseon-dong alleys of Jongno, Seoul. Parking is so tight that her husband circled the block by car while she picked up garlic bread for 6,800 won, an onion bagel for 6,000 won and squid ink custard bread for 4,500 won. The garlic bread, crisp outside and moist inside, was her top pick, and a notice saying Munhwa Bakery donates each day's unsold bread to people in need made the visit even more memorable.

Bread packed to go from Munhwa Bakery in Ikseon-dong

Today's Baromy's Right Living post takes us to Ikseon-dong, where I followed the smell of fresh bread and walked out with delicious bread and a warm heart — Munhwa Bakery.

What kind of bakery is Munhwa Bakery in Ikseon-dong?

Hanok-style exterior of Munhwa Bakery in Ikseon-dong

Munhwa Bakery is a hanok-style bakery that fits right into the Ikseon-dong alleys. There's no space to eat inside — it's takeout only.

Being a bakery in Ikseon-dong, the shop itself is styled like a hanok (traditional Korean house), matching the surrounding atmosphere really well.

Customers kept streaming in the whole time we were there, and the trays kept getting refilled as bread sold out. Since it's takeout-only, choosing bread, paying, and walking out didn't take long at all.

Is there parking at Munhwa Bakery in Ikseon-dong?

Parking at Munhwa Bakery is tough. We came by car, and after some back-and-forth over where to park, I told my husband, "Just circle the block once~" haha. I ran in, picked out the bread, and came right back out.

The three breads picked up at Munhwa Bakery

Munhwa Bakery is apparently famous for garlic bread, coffee bread, and onion bagel. Coffee bread seemed like it'd be hard for my kid to eat, so I picked squid ink custard bread instead. So the day's picks were three: garlic bread, onion bagel, and squid ink custard bread!

Garlic bread, 6,800 won — my top pick

Oh, this place really knows how to make garlic bread. If I had to pick just one, it'd be this. Crisp outside, moist inside, with a gentle garlic aroma. And most of all, it felt like they didn't skimp on the sauce at all! That's what kept it moist instead of dry.

I'd heard people call it one of Seoul's top three bakeries and thought, really? But honestly, for the garlic bread alone, I think it earns that title haha. If you're looking for a great bakery in Ikseon-dong, I'd tell you to try the garlic bread at Munhwa Bakery first.

Onion bagel, 6,000 won

The first thing I noticed about the onion bagel was, "Why is this so big?" — the sheer size caught my eye. Looking at the crust, I thought it might be tough, but it turned out softer than expected. It was packed with cream cheese inside too, which paired nicely with the bread. It looked heavy and rustic, but tasted soft — a bit different from its first impression :)

The squid ink custard bread I picked instead of coffee bread! Being jet black, it looked unique right off the bat. The custard inside was soft and exactly the flavor I was hoping for. The squid ink bread went well with the custard, making it smooth and easy to eat. Glad I chose this one to share with my kid :)

The bakery that donates its unsold bread

There was one more thing about Munhwa Bakery that stuck with me just as much as the taste. A sign explained that any bread left unsold at the end of the day isn't thrown away — it's given to children facing food insecurity, elderly people living alone, and social welfare facilities.

It was just a small bakery we stopped by briefly, but reading that made my heart warm up unexpectedly. Maybe it was the delicious smell haha. Customers kept coming in the whole time we shopped, with bread constantly being restocked — and knowing that leftover bread goes toward something good made it all the more memorable.

Barom's Right Living: final verdict on Munhwa Bakery

Munhwa Bakery, the Ikseon-dong favorite with the striking hanok style. My top pick is the garlic bread! Crisp outside, moist inside, with the garlic aroma and sauce working so well together that I'd buy it again next time. And knowing they donate leftover bread is one more reason to remember Munhwa Bakery fondly.

Next time I'm looking for a good bakery in Ikseon-dong, I think I'll stop by Munhwa Bakery again. This time I'll grab the coffee bread I couldn't get because of my kid haha.
