Gimhae beef BBQ worth a 40-min Friday wait: Wondaepo Sogalbisal
In short
Wondaepo Sogalbisal is a beef short rib (sogalbisal) restaurant on Pyeongjeon-ro in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, mostly filled with neighborhood regulars. A couple walked over around 6pm on a Friday, were first on the waitlist yet still waited about 40 minutes, then ate 500g of emperor short rib in a house marinade made from fresh ground fruit (₩35,000) with doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). Wondaepo Sogalbisal is a local Gimhae favorite where crunchy, tender beef short rib at an easy price makes the 40-minute wait worth it.

How did we find Wondaepo Sogalbisal in Gimhae?
Wondaepo Sogalbisal (원대포소갈비살) is a short rib BBQ restaurant on Pyeongjeon-ro in Gimhae, and we walked there from home one Friday evening. Thanks to our little one's own plans, my husband and I suddenly had some "free couple" time for the first time in ages. Instead of going far, we looked for somewhere new within walking distance, and that's how we found Wondaepo Sogalbisal.

Looks like we were the only ones who didn't know about it?? We got there around 6pm and the place was already packed, with a waiting list too. The 40-minute wait was totally worth it, so this is a local gem I want to share with anyone searching for Gimhae beef.

We left the car at home and walked. Since we had our free couple time, I thought it would be nice to stroll over slowly and have a drink with our meat. I like eating around here and come by often, yet I had no idea Wondaepo Sogalbisal was here!

It's not a flashy, polished BBQ place. The first thing I felt was a relaxed neighborhood vibe, where locals come for an easy dinner. It was much busier inside than it looked from outside, and being a Friday night, it was bustling with everyone from friends out together to families.
How long is the Friday night wait at Wondaepo Sogalbisal?

When we arrived around 6pm on Friday, it was already full, and even as party number 1 we waited about 40 minutes. The waitlist is done through Catch Table.
I figured it was still before the dinner rush, and I was completely wrong. The first customers had already settled in and started eating, so every seat was taken. I assumed number 1 meant we'd get in quickly, so I was a little flustered at first. More and more teams kept registering on Catch Table too. Since it's a place where you grill your own short rib, a table's meal doesn't seem to be short.

After waiting myself, next time I'd either go early for the first seating or aim for around 7pm, when one wave of customers might leave. That's just my own take based on this day, of course. Watching the inside tables stay full the whole time, my thought of "it must be really good" only grew.
Why Wondaepo Sogalbisal feels like an old-school local BBQ spot

Wondaepo Sogalbisal focuses on the meat itself rather than a shiny interior, and the two owners kept trimming meat inside the whole time. Once we sat down, I understood a bit better why it has that local-favorite feel. Conveniently, the seat we were given let us see all of it.

They don't bring out meat that was all prepped in advance. They cut the raw meat right then, and we could even see them mixing in the marinade once an order came in. Watching it prepared right in front of us made me even more excited.

Rather than calling it an old-school spot just because it's been open for years, I felt that charm in its rustic, hand-made atmosphere and in the regulars who come in naturally. It clearly has the local vibe where neighbors know about it before tourists do.
Fruit-marinated emperor short rib, 500g for ₩35,000: how did it taste?

At Wondaepo Sogalbisal we ordered the emperor short rib (hwangje galbisal) in the house marinade, 500g for ₩35,000. Short rib is good even unmarinated, but I was curious because they say they grind fresh fruit for the marinade. The emperor cut doesn't come in large amounts from each cow, so even while ordering I thought, "For beef, this is pretty decent!"

After grilling it golden on the grill and taking a bite, the memory of the 40-minute wait vanished right away. It kept that crunchy, chewy short rib texture while being tender, not tough. The marinade wasn't so sweet that it covered the meat's flavor, so we kept reaching for more.
The marinade didn't hide the beef flavor, and I loved that I could really feel the texture of the meat. Midway through the meal I naturally thought of our little one. They would have eaten so well, so we said we'd definitely come back next time, all three of us.

Is the doenjang jjigae at Wondaepo Sogalbisal worth ordering?
The doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) here is packed with meat and has a rich broth. I ordered it thinking it would go great with rice between bites of meat, and that finish of a spoonful of stew after beef was just right. Even though I was full, I kept going back for more.

Who is Wondaepo Sogalbisal best for?
If you love short rib but have found the price too much to eat it often, I think Wondaepo Sogalbisal is a Gimhae beef spot worth trying. It's not just the price: after eating there, the meat's texture and the marinade suited my taste well, which made me even happier.
It's good for a family meal and for drinks with friends over beef. I wondered why I only found out about it now, yet part of me also thought, "I kind of want to keep this to ourselves…" (haha). Still, you have to admit good food is good food. Next time I plan to bring our little one too. If you're looking for a beef restaurant in Gimhae, definitely stop by!
