Gangnam café for salted choco financier and fig pie: Upper and Under

Hello! I'm Ibappul, always hungry, always eating both a meal and dessert~

Today I visited a large café near Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station — one with a whopping three floors. Open, airy vibes plus delicious desserts, all at Upper and Under. Let's get into the detailed review~

Where is Upper and Under, and what are its hours?

Upper and Under sits between Sinnonhyeon Station and Gangnam Station, closer to Sinnonhyeon Station — a 5-minute walk from Exit 6. The address is 618-17 Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, and it's open daily from 11am to 10pm. If you're looking for a café in Yeoksam-dong that stays open late, I recommend Upper and Under~ There's no dedicated parking, so you'll need to use a nearby public parking lot~

Inside Upper and Under: group seats on 1F up to the 3F terrace

The entrance is on the front right. Order on the 2nd floor~

The 1st floor has floor-to-ceiling windows that give a wonderfully open feel. There's group seating too, perfect for meetups. Plus there's a large table on the 1st floor that looked great for coming with older family members.

On the way up to the 2nd floor there are outdoor tables too, and inside there were people studying, with seating ranging from 2-person to 4-person tables — lots of variety. (There were people studying, and the atmosphere wasn't too loud for it~)

The 3rd floor also had a variety of seats from 2 to 4 people, plus an outdoor terrace — great to use on a nice day~~

Upper and Under's menu: cream lattes are the signature

Upper and Under's signature is the cream drink line, only available iced. Beyond the signature menu there's a wide range of drinks — coffees and non-coffees without cream on top, plus various ades. I went in the evening and ordered the matcha cream oat latte for 9,000 won!

They even had something called a mango bar sherbet latte!! (Such a unique menu item... interesting interesting...)

The dessert case at 5pm: cakes and baked sweets

The dessert variety was really impressive. The cake selection included fig, tiramisu, raspberry, lemon, Earl Grey grapefruit and more. The lineup seems to change daily, and when I visited around 5pm this was what was left.

There was cheesecake too, and lots of baked goods. The baked goods were popular, so only one of each was left~ㅠㅠ

The fig tart caught my eye the most!! The visuals were insane..ㄷㄷ There were also financiers, madeleines and more~

Madeleines, canelés, nunette financiers.. all with various toppings on top, I wanted to eat them all...(seriously wild visuals..)

I ordered the fig cake for 8,500 won, the fig pie for 8,300 won, and the salted choco financier for 4,100 won~ (sweeping up all the fig~)

How did the matcha cream oat latte and fig desserts taste?

The matcha cream oat latte, fig cake, fig pie and salted choco financier I ordered arrived~

First, the cream on top of the matcha cream oat latte is really delicious... I tried the cream alone first.. and I get why this place is known for its cream lattes.. Not too sweet, rich, and it paired well with the milk. Once mixed together it got even smoother and the matcha flavor really came through.

The visuals are insane.. so much fig.. and the cream was piled on so prettily I wanted to take a bite right away..

The fig cake had milk cream between fluffy layers, and the softness between the milk cream and fresh cream really came through. There was fig between the layers too, so it was basically a fig-heaven cake~ㅋㅋㅋ

The fig tart's crust was crisp but soft inside, and the tart itself was delicious. The fig on top paired really well with the cream inside~ The salted choco financier delivered a proper sweet-and-salty balance too, exactly what a good financier should be~ If you like something light with a sweet-salty kick, I recommend the salted choco financier~

Water is available at the self-serve bar~

They said if you leave a receipt review, the first 10 people each day get a free financier! One drink plus a receipt review for a financier.. nice..hehe

Verdict: a large Gangnam café for meetups and studying alike

I visited Upper and Under, a large café between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station with a warm atmosphere and lots of open space. With its variety of desserts and spacious seating it seemed great for group meetups, and since it's open late, I'd recommend it to people who want to study too! I strongly recommend the signature matcha cream latte~ The matcha flavor really came through nicely, and I loved that haha
