Sokcho market croquettes, red crab a picky kid loved: Samsam Goroke
In short
Samsam Goroke is a handmade croquette shop in Sokcho Central Market in Sokcho, Gangwon, across from the original Mansok Dakgangjeong shop. The writer bought the 6-flavor set (17,000 won), shared one croquette with a picky-eater child while walking the market, and tried the rest at home, including fire jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle) and Sokcho red crab. If you want a different market snack to share with kids beyond dakgangjeong (sweet fried chicken) or sulppang (makgeolli steamed bread), Samsam Goroke is worth a stop.

When you travel to Sokcho, you end up stopping by Central Market at least once. I went to look around on this trip too. There's dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken bites), sul-ppang (steamed rice-wine bread), so much food that just walking through is fun. As I wandered, I got a little peckish and went looking for a light snack, and that's how I ended up buying from Samsam Goroke~
Where is Samsam Goroke in Sokcho Central Market?
Samsam Goroke is a handmade croquette shop inside Sokcho Central Market, at 28 Jungangsijang-ro 6-gil, Sokcho-si, Gangwon, South Korea. For parking, you can use the Sokcho Tourism and Fish Market public parking lot.
- A variety of handmade croquettes

- Crispy texture and generous fillings

Samsam Goroke is across from the original Mansok Dakgangjeong shop, to the right of Saeromm Matjip, so it's easier to find than you'd think while browsing the market. There are so many shops inside that first-timers can get confused, but Samsam Goroke stands out fairly well :)

Samsam Goroke 6-flavor croquette set: what's inside and price
The Samsam Goroke 6-flavor set is ₩17,000 and comes in six flavors: sweet red bean, Sokcho potato, chili japchae, fire jjamppong, Sokcho red crab and pollock roe cream. Looking over the croquette menu, it was hard to pick just one, so we went with the 6-flavor set~

I think the set is great for sharing among several people, and you get to enjoy a variety of flavors at once~ When I opened the box, there was one of each kind, and a paper marked which flavor was which!

What does the Sokcho potato croquette taste like?
The Sokcho potato croquette feels a little different from an ordinary potato croquette! The soft potato flavor is rich and subtly nutty, the kind of taste people of all ages would like?!

What does the chili japchae croquette taste like?
The chili japchae croquette is packed with a Chinese-restaurant-style filling. It's salty with a faint smoky wok flavor, and I kept reaching for more. Definitely different from an ordinary croquette!

Will a picky-eater kid like Samsam Goroke croquettes?
My picky eater almost finished a whole Samsam Goroke croquette while we walked through Sokcho Central Market. I'd packed them to eat at our accommodation, but as we walked the market, my child said they wanted some. So I took one out and handed it over, and they ate it much better than I expected. One bite and they kept asking for more, so we ended up almost finishing one while browsing the market~ hehe
They're usually picky, so seeing them eat so happily made me extra satisfied. It's not a snack only adults like; kids can eat it without any fuss :)

Fire jjamppong and Sokcho red crab croquettes, eaten at home
I tried the rest of the Samsam Goroke croquettes one by one after getting back home. I'd packed them to eat at the accommodation, but I was fuller than expected and couldn't.

Is the fire jjamppong croquette very spicy?
The fire jjamppong croquette wasn't as spicy as I expected; it felt like jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) turned into a croquette. It was the one whose name I was most curious about, and on the first bite the smoky wok flavor came first, followed by a spicy kick.

What does the Sokcho red crab croquette taste like?
As the name suggests, the Sokcho red crab croquette had a subtle savory depth of red crab. From the first bite you could tell it was generously filled, and the crab's distinctive flavor came up naturally as I chewed. It wasn't overpowering or fishy at all; the mild, nutty taste worked better than I expected, and my child ate it really happily~~
