Why did I go looking for a high-fluoride kids' toothpaste?

You know kids absolutely have to use fluoride toothpaste, right?! My child eats way too much candy and jelly, so I always lean toward high-fluoride toothpaste. This time I tried Verdante High Fluoride Kids' Toothpaste!

There are sooooo many kids' toothpastes out there, aren't there? Fluoride-free, fluoride, high-fluoride, so many kinds. After searching and searching, the one I landed on was Verdante High Fluoride Toothpaste! It's said to be a 1450ppm high-fluoride toothpaste with active ingredients for strong cavity prevention, gum protection and even tartar prevention.

Verdante high-fluoride toothpaste: is it spicy despite the high fluoride?

Even though Verdante High Fluoride Kids' Toothpaste is 1450ppm, it wasn't spicy at all. I wondered whether a high-fluoride toothpaste could really be mild, but it has the apple flavor kids love, so my child used it without any resistance.

Packaging and size

The Verdante packaging is colorful and cute too, isn't it? The ingredient list is printed in detail on the back of the box. I'll go over the ingredients below :) Maybe because it's an 80g tube, it fit neatly in one hand.

How a child who refused to brush reacted to apple toothpaste

My kid was so excited about brushing with a new toothpaste~~ When I said it was the favorite Avengers toothbrush plus a new apple-flavored toothpaste, off they ran into the bathroom, haha.

They even gave me a thumbs-up and said the apple taste was delicious, haha. Normally I have to chase them around every time to get them to brush, but this time they brought the toothpaste over themselves and asked me to squeeze it out!?

Once my child has tasted a spicy toothpaste, even a little spiciness makes them refuse to brush, but Verdante isn't spicy at all despite being high-fluoride, so they liked it. Even while using a 1000ppm toothpaste I was anxious because of all the sweets they eat, and switching to 1450ppm high-fluoride set my mind at least a little at ease.

Kids' fluoride toothpaste: how many ppm, and how much to use?

From what I found, the common message from major health bodies worldwide (Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare, EAPD, NHS and others) is that the key to preventing cavities is not lowering the fluoride concentration, but using a high-fluoride toothpaste in the right amount for the child's age.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare says low-fluoride or fluoride-free toothpaste has no cavity-prevention effect, so it recommends 1,000–1,500ppm even for babies and toddlers. The EAPD (European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry) and the NHS (UK) recommend 1,350–1,500ppm from infancy for children at risk of cavities, and say adjusting the amount from a "grain of rice" to a "pea" by age is the safest and most effective approach.

Wait, before age 3 it's supposed to be that tiny?.. I've been brushing my child with the age-3-and-up amount all this time, oops T_T lol
