Magok lamb chop restaurant with non-spicy sauce for kids: Hwarodam

In short

Hwarodam Yang Kkochi Magok is a charcoal-grilled lamb restaurant on the 2nd floor of Queens Park 10, between Magok Station and Balsan Station in Seoul. The writer's family had a staff-grilled lamb shoulder rack plus thick lamb skewers, lamb sirloin skewers and lamb rib-finger skewers, and a child who rarely eats meat finished a whole bowl of rice with a separate non-spicy sauce. Thanks to partitioned and private-room seating, Hwarodam Yang Kkochi Magok works as well for family meals with kids as for group dinners.

Hwarodam Yang Kkochi Magok (화로담양꼬치 마곡) is a newly opened charcoal-grilled lamb restaurant. I suddenly craved lamb after a long while, so I went to Hwarodam Yang Kkochi, a hot spot for Magok group dinners, and the thick lamb skewers were different from the usual kind. On top of that, the staff grill the lamb rack for you, so it was easy to enjoy and I could taste the real flavor of the lamb. Both the food and the atmosphere satisfied me, so I think it's a good place for company dinners, family gatherings, dates, or drinks with friends :)

Where is Hwarodam Yang Kkochi Magok, and what about hours and parking?

Hwarodam Yang Kkochi Magok is on the 2nd floor of Queens Park 10. It's open 14:00–23:00 and closed every Sunday. They say it's a charcoal lamb grill that selects only young lamb under one year old. Every seat is partitioned or a private room, so you can enjoy a company dinner or gathering in a private, relaxed atmosphere.

It's in Queens Park 10, between Magok Station and Balsan Station on Line 5, so it's a decent option by public transport.

Atmosphere and seating at Hwarodam Yang Kkochi Magok

Upscale interior of Hwarodam Yang Kkochi Magok

The upscale interior was clearly different from any lamb skewer place I've visited before. Instead of the casual feel typical of skewer joints, it's a more atmospheric, tidy space, so the meal felt more special.

Partitioned and private-room seating at Hwarodam

Every seat is partitioned or a private room, so you can enjoy lamb in private. Doesn't it seem good for Magok company dinners, family gatherings and dates alike?!

Hwarodam menu and what we ordered, with prices

Hwarodam menu and prices

Hwarodam Yang Kkochi has a wide menu to suit every taste: grilled cuts such as lamb rack (French rack, shoulder rack), raw lamb sirloin and lamb flower rib meat, plus lamb sirloin skewers, thick lamb skewers and lamb rib-finger meat skewers. There are also Chinese-style dishes like mango cream shrimp, flavorful fried eggplant, tomato egg stir-fry and kkwabaorou (Chinese-style sweet and sour fried pork), so you can round out the table. Even with a big group for a Magok company dinner, everyone can enjoy things their own way.

We ordered everything from the shoulder rack to lamb sirloin skewers, thick lamb skewers and lamb rib-finger meat skewers to try a variety of lamb.

Side dishes and the 3 signature sauces at Hwarodam

Three signature sauces: chive flower, secret soy sauce and Silk Road

The side dishes and sauces felt clearly different from other places too. Neat sides like seasoned scallion salad, white kimchi and seasoned gungchae (stem lettuce) come with three sauces: chive flower, secret soy sauce and the Silk Road (Bidangil) signature sauce, so you can mix and match to taste.

How does the staff-grilled lamb rack (shoulder rack) taste?

The lamb rack at Hwarodam comes with a grilling service where the staff cook it for you, so there's no worrying about doneness and you can enjoy it at its best, which I loved.

A moist, tender piece of shoulder rack

The shoulder rack was really tender, never tough or dry, and the moist, melt-apart texture stood out. There was no gamey lamb smell yet the flavor was fully alive, which satisfied me. Best of all, my child, who usually doesn't go for meat, ate it well.

A non-spicy sauce for kids

Hwarodam Yang Kkochi Magok also prepared a separate non-spicy sauce for the child, and it must have suited their taste, because they polished off a whole bowl of rice with the lamb!! Seeing them eat so well after so long made the meal feel extra good :)

The lamb skewers at Hwarodam stood out from the very thickness. The chunky bite and the rich juices that came with it were impressive, and the meat chewed softly yet with a pleasant springiness, which was very satisfying.

You might think such thick pieces would turn out dry, but not at all; the lamb flavor came through even stronger, so a single skewer had real presence.

The lamb rib-finger meat skewer had the softest texture of the three. I bet it goes really well with beer, and it was my personal favorite.

I really enjoyed it :)

Is Hwarodam Yang Kkochi Magok worth a return visit?

The lamb rack and skewers were rich and tender, pure wow. It's a place I'd like to come back to with my parents later. Future regular!! If you're looking for a Magok company dinner spot, or a great lamb rack and lamb skewer restaurant, give Hwarodam Yang Kkochi a thought~
