Ulsan rice cake takeout box of black sesame injeolmi: Baekho Tteokbang

Baekho Tteokbang is a pumpkin injeolmi (sweet rice cake) shop on the 1st floor of the Geukdong Star Class complex on Beonyeong-ro in Nam-gu, Ulsan, across from Ulsan Cultural Center. The writer took home a lunchbox pack with a built-in fork holding pumpkin injeolmi coated in black sesame and castella toppings, and found that the crumbly sweetness of the castella gave way to soft, chewy pumpkin rice cake, with an unusually generous layer of black sesame. Baekho Tteokbang is a solid pick for holiday gifts or thank-you rice cakes.

Ulju forest café for omija tea and squid ink red bean bread: MUG

MUG is a large bakery café at 90 Hyangsandagae-ro in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan, with a forest for its backyard. On a spontaneous Sunday afternoon drive, two friends shared a blueberry cream cheese cinnamon roll (6,800 won), squid ink red bean bread and two cups of omija tea (schisandra berry tea) by the floor-to-ceiling window for two hours. With late summer easing into early autumn, no place beats MUG for sitting with the forest.
