Ulsan rice cake takeout box of black sesame injeolmi: Baekho Tteokbang

In short

Baekho Tteokbang is a pumpkin injeolmi (sweet rice cake) shop on the 1st floor of the Geukdong Star Class complex on Beonyeong-ro in Nam-gu, Ulsan, across from Ulsan Cultural Center. The writer took home a lunchbox pack with a built-in fork holding pumpkin injeolmi coated in black sesame and castella toppings, and found that the crumbly sweetness of the castella gave way to soft, chewy pumpkin rice cake, with an unusually generous layer of black sesame. Baekho Tteokbang is a solid pick for holiday gifts or thank-you rice cakes.

You've got to be diligent if you want to eat well — that's the life philosophy of someone blessed with a good appetite for good food, haha. With Chuseok coming up, I wanted to try some premium-grade rice cakes. Baekho Tteokbang, a rice cake shop in Sinjeong-dong, Ulsan, has a reputation for delicious injeolmi (sweet rice cake). After all, it has to taste good to me first before I can confidently give it as a gift or a thank-you.

Located on the 1st floor of the Geukdong Star Class complex on Beonyeong-ro, Baekho Tteokbang is a shop specializing in premium pumpkin injeolmi, aiming to elevate traditional Korean rice cakes.

Where is Baekho Tteokbang, and where do you park?

Baekho Tteokbang, a rice cake shop in Sinjeong-dong, Ulsan, is located on the 1st floor at 223 Beonyeong-ro, Nam-gu, Ulsan. Following the navigation, I drove straight into the building's basement.

Since it's a mixed-use building, I was a bit nervous about getting into the parking lot, but there was an intercom at the entrance. I said, "I'm just stopping by Baekho Tteokbang," and the gate opened right up.

I took the elevator up to the 1st floor.

It's right across from Ulsan Cultural Center — a rice cake shop I'd passed by so many times, and I'm only now finally visiting!!

Pumpkin injeolmi by topping: castella, mugwort, black sesame

Baekho Tteokbang's pumpkin injeolmi is the same rice cake underneath, just coated in different toppings: castella, mugwort castella, or black sesame. As someone who really loves pumpkin, I was so curious about the pumpkin injeolmi flavor. Coated with castella topping, the rice cake sits there looking crumbly and soft — barely looking like a rice cake at all.

They say it's made with sincerity every day, using good ingredients like domestic glutinous rice and 100% Ulsan Bokjori glutinous rice and pumpkin.

This is the mugwort castella pumpkin rice cake. As mentioned, it's the same pumpkin injeolmi base with just a different topping.

This is pumpkin injeolmi topped with black sesame. From the outside, the mugwort and black sesame versions look similar in color, but the flavors are completely different. Both would probably be flavors older folks love, but I found myself leaning toward black sesame — so black sesame it is!!

Holiday gift sets and thank-you rice cake prices at Baekho Tteokbang

Baekho Tteokbang is also hugely popular as a gift set option, and demand really explodes right before major holidays like Chuseok.

It's nice to give it as a gift, prettily wrapped in a bojagi (traditional wrapping cloth).

Baekho tteok (small), ₩4,000. A good size for group orders — but it's reservation only.

The Baekho thank-you set is small injeolmi plus a small drink. Seems like a nice idea to prepare it as a set with a drink.

Everything's built around the healthy ingredient pumpkin — sweet pumpkin sikhye (rice punch) and pumpkin milk. Pumpkin sikhye is a drink I reach for often. Pumpkin milk seems like it'd be a great snack choice for kids.

For my own snack, I picked the black sesame and castella pumpkin injeolmi.

Packed in a lunchbox format, it would also be great as a snack for outdoor activities. Let me try it at home first.

There's a built-in fork so you can enjoy it comfortably anywhere. It's tucked inside the lid, so there's no worry of losing it or it collecting dust. Stays clean, haha.

How the castella and black sesame injeolmi tasted at home

Baekho Tteokbang's pumpkin injeolmi is cut into squares and then coated with the toppings. How can they be so perfectly square, like they were measured with a ruler? I took a bite. Mmm~♡ It felt like a cloud entered my mouth — soft and fluffy. The sweetness and crumbliness of the castella hits first, waking up my taste buds, then the soft pumpkin injeolmi melts down chewily in my mouth. The subtle pumpkin aroma lingers afterward. Who knew a rice cake could be like this, haha — so delicious.

The black sesame one is also amazing. I've never seen such a fluffy, generous amount of topping before. It felt like facing the ambitious creation of a homemaker with an incredibly generous hand. So generous, so generous. Really, really delicious. It's been a while since I felt this kind of abundance in food.
