Gimhae Chinese dinner for two: ₩41,000 tangsuyuk set at Dongbaek

Dongbaek (동백) is a Chinese restaurant with private rooms and course menus on Gaya-ro near Hwalcheon Pass in Gimhae, Gyeongnam. On a day out at Shinsegae Gimhae, the writer and a companion had dinner at Dongbaek and ordered the ₩41,000 tangsuyuk set (mini sweet-and-sour pork, seafood jjamppong noodle soup and yusanseul rice), and the bowls and portions looked bigger than a large size at other Chinese restaurants. Dongbaek's tangsuyuk set is generous enough for three women rather than two, which makes it great value.

No-wait weekend pork BBQ in Yulha, Gimhae: skin-on jowl, Anmin Yulha

Anmin Yulha is a pork BBQ restaurant on Yulhakape-gil in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, where staff grill the meat at your table. On a revisit around 1:30 pm on a weekend, the writer walked into Anmin Yulha with no wait and ordered single portions of pork belly (12,000 won), pork neck (12,000 won) and skin-on pork jowl (20,000 won for 180g), then finished with sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew). The verdict: chewy skin-on jowl and tender pork neck make Anmin Yulha a satisfying BBQ spot in Yulha District 1, even at lunchtime.

Freshwater eel in Gimhae with herbal sauce Mom loved: Ildeung Chamsutt

Ildeung Chamsutt Jangeo (일등참숯장어) is a newly opened restaurant in Gusan-dong, Gimhae (the Samgye-dong area), specializing in Korean freshwater eel grilled directly over charcoal. The writer and her mother, who usually struggles with eel, shared 1kg of freshwater eel (₩59,000) with doenjang stew; the owner grilled the eel at the table, and it was tender with no fishy smell, with a memorable herbal sauce and fried eel bones among the side dishes. Ildeung Chamsutt Jangeo is worth recommending for generous portions of thick Korean freshwater eel at good value.

Clara Beauty Scalp Spa Skin & Body Changwon (클라라뷰티 두피스파 스킨&바디 창원점) is a private one-on-one aroma scalp spa in Jungdong, Uijang-gu, Changwon. For a hot, stressed scalp, the writer booked a 1-hour intensive aroma scalp spa: after a condition check and an aroma chosen to match, the treatment ran from shoulder and neck release through scaling, shampoo, a scalp pack, a water head spa and an ampoule. The scalp felt lighter and the heat eased right away, making Clara Beauty a relaxing Korean head spa the writer would 100% return to.

Changwon hair salon fix for a boxy grown-out root perm: Vivienne Hair

Vivienne Hair, Changwon Sangnam branch is a hair salon on the 2nd floor of the Baskin-Robbins building at Goindol intersection in Sangnam-dong, Changwon. The writer's hair was perm-damaged and her grown-out root perm made her head look boxy, so after a consultation she had the root perm line straightened instead of redone and added an Ahyunche clinic (120,000 won), taking about 1 hour 40 minutes from consultation to finish. She left Vivienne Hair happy with soft C-curls and a rounded head shape again.
