Buan Korean restaurant for clam porridge and grilled fish: Gyehwado

In short

Gyehwado is a Korean restaurant serving clam porridge and grilled fish across from Sono Belle Resort in Byeonsan-myeon, Buan, near Gyeokpo Port. The writer went with his mother-in-law and wife and ordered clam porridge plus the grilled fish set for two, which arrived with four grilled fish — pomfret, rockfish, red seabream and cutlassfish — sweet pumpkin and mushroom hotpot rice, and scorched rice tea. Because Gyehwado opens at 7 a.m., it works well as breakfast during a Sono Belle stay or as a calm sit-down meal with parents.

Today's story is about Gyehwado, a Gyeokpo Port restaurant I visited with my mother-in-law and my wife haha. We were on our way back from Sono Belle in Buan looking for somewhere to eat nearby, and this place was seriously amazing. Turns out it's already a well-known Byeonsan restaurant lol.

Where Gyehwado is and when it opens

Gyehwado is at 1F, 46 Byeonsanhaebyeon-ro, Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, open from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. It's directly across from Sono Belle Resort, so access is honestly the best haha.

Since it opens at 7am, you can use it as breakfast too, and the interior is spacious and comfortable enough for group dining without any issue.

Inside Gyehwado and how ordering works

The inside of Gyehwado is clean and modern, so I felt good the moment I walked in haha. It was an atmosphere I had zero worries bringing my mother-in-law to.

It's a table-order system so ordering was simple! I couldn't believe a Gyeokpo Port restaurant this comfortable and easy to use even existed haha.

Side dishes and the clam seaweed soup

As soon as we sat down, the side dishes started coming out one by one, and there were so many, all well put together haha. They were made completely without seasoning powder, clearly a lot of care went into them.

The seasoning was spot on, and the kimchi especially was really good! They use domestic cabbage and chili powder for it all, so we could eat as much as we wanted haha.

Being close to the coast, seaweed side dishes came out too, giving it a real Byeonsan restaurant feel. If you order the grilled fish, you also get clam seaweed soup served hot in a stone bowl, with cheongyang chili peppers making it spicy and refreshing — the kind of broth that cures a hangover on its own haha.

What does Gyehwado's clam porridge taste like?

The dish I ordered was clam porridge! It's made with clams from the sea off Byeonsan in Buan. The distinctively clean, deep broth flavor of the clams was fully alive in the porridge — one spoonful in and I knew this was it lol.

It wasn't harsh at all, mild but filling in a way that really hit the spot after a long drive haha. My mother-in-law said it was so delicious and finished the whole bowl lol.

Grilled fish is famous at Gyeokpo Port restaurant Gyehwado, but I strongly recommend the clam porridge too. It's especially perfect for anyone wanting a gentle, filling meal haha.

Hotpot rice and scorched rice tea

Gyehwado also serves hotpot rice packed with pumpkin and mushrooms. The rice cooks up chewy and sticky, and eating it with the side dishes is basically rice-thief territory haha.

Finishing with scorched rice tea at the end left my stomach feeling full and settled the whole afternoon lol. Among Byeonsan restaurants, I think this is honestly the best one that comes with hotpot rice too.

What comes in the grilled fish set for two

The first dish was the grilled fish set for two! Four kinds of fish, four pieces total — pomfret, rockfish, red seabream, and cutlassfish, all served in one dish. Even having pomfret, which is hard to find at grilled fish places in Jeonju, feels very true to a Gyeokpo Port restaurant haha.

There wasn't a lot of meat but it was soft and moist, exceptional really, and the sweet-and-salty seasoning was total rice-thief material lol. The grilled rockfish had firm meat, great texture, and a clean, mild flavor.

The grilled cutlassfish had an especially good chewy texture — I really discovered its true value that day lol. The combination of pumpkin-mushroom hotpot rice and freshly grilled fish is basically Korean soul food itself haha.

Not many Byeonsan restaurants pull off this combination. Finishing with scorched rice tea left me feeling full and satisfied the whole afternoon haha.

Who Gyehwado suits best

Gyehwado, a Sono Belle Buan restaurant, is especially recommended for these people!

  • Anyone looking for a proper meal during a Sono Belle trip
  • Anyone who wants to bring their mother-in-law or parents somewhere tidy
  • Anyone who wants to try Byeonsan-style grilled fish near Gyeokpo Port
  • Anyone wanting something mild and filling, not overly seasoned

Among Gyeokpo Port restaurants, this is one where atmosphere, food, and accessibility all check out haha. I don't think there's a better Sono Belle Buan restaurant than this one.

Tips for visiting Gyehwado

  • Opens at 7am, so it works for breakfast too
  • Table-order system makes ordering easy
