Gyodae gimbap dinner: cheese egg set, scallion tuna roll to go, Halls

I was in Seoul and picking a simple dinner when "gimbap" (seaweed rice roll) popped into my head. So I headed to Halls Gimbap Main Branch (홀스김밥본점), a well-known gimbap spot near Gyodae that has been loved for 8 years.

Halls Gimbap Main Branch location and hours

Halls Gimbap Main Branch is at 90 Seochojungang-ro 22-gil, Seocho-gu, Seoul (1st floor), 365 m from Gyodae Station Exit 1. Hours are 08:30-20:00 (open every Sunday, all year), with a break from 15:00 to 16:00, and 08:00-15:00 on Saturdays. Takeout, reservations, delivery and parking are all available.

The horse sign: how did it become Halls?

The exterior has a fresh, orange-like look 🍯 and there's a horse drawn on the sign, which made me wonder, "How did the shop end up named Halls?"

It used to operate as "0to Gimbap" (0토김밥), and because the owner took over the business directly rather than as a franchise, 📍the name was changed📍 and the newly named 🐎Halls Gimbap Main Branch🐎 was born!

The signature items at this Gyodae gimbap spot are, of course, the gimbap, and they sell several kinds: scallion tuna, cheese egg, wasabi and more.

Bar seats for solo diners and free katsuobushi broth

Inside there are bar-style tables, which makes it a good place to eat alone.

Of course, there are also tables that seat 4-5 people.

In the back of the shop,

you can also buy cup ramyeon (instant noodles) to enjoy with your gimbap.

Katsuobushi (dried bonito) broth is free too, and a sip is perfect when the gimbap makes your throat feel dry.

Cheese egg gimbap + dakgangjeong, plus scallion tuna gimbap

Today I ordered the cheese egg gimbap + dakgangjeong set and the scallion tuna gimbap.

I completely fell for the cheese egg gimbap + dakgangjeong…❤️ The dakgangjeong was sooooo much better than at a regular chicken place. The sweet-and-salty chicken with the cheese egg gimbap is honestly no exaggeration the best combo 🍯

Dipping the cheese egg gimbap in the wasabi sauce that came with it, I felt like I had everything in the world 🫶🏻

Eating the dakgangjeong with a chili pepper was deliciously spicy, and I was amazed that seasoned chicken could stay this crispy.

I first ordered just the cheese egg gimbap and dakgangjeong set, but it was so good that I got a scallion tuna gimbap to go as well.

After packing it up I was so curious about the taste that I pulled out a piece and ate it ^^ It was so good.

Overall verdict

A famous Gyodae gimbap spot loved for 8 years, where you can enjoy well-stuffed gimbap and crispy, sweet dakgangjeong in a good-value set ✨

I love that you can eat alone comfortably and have gimbap + dakgangjeong + ramyeon together.
