Daemyeong-dong Korean meal at opening: barley gangjeong, Cafe Dongi

Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch is a Korean set-meal (hanjeongsik) restaurant in Daemyeong-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu. On a hot day the writer arrived right at opening and ordered the kimchi stew set, the 1-person Grandma's jjukkumi (webfoot octopus) stir-fry set and a tasting-size mini tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), plus unlimited self-serve fried eggs and barley gangjeong (crunchy puffed-barley sweets). Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch filled up in under 30 minutes, so for a hearty Korean meal, arrive at opening time.

Dongdaegu Station lamb skewers with yuzu radish refills: Yangbokjeom

Yangbokjeom Dongdaegu Station Branch is a lamb skewer restaurant in the middle of the Dongdaegu Station food alley in Dong-gu, Daegu. On a return visit, the writer ordered lamb skewers for two, okmyeon (warm corn noodle soup) and Tera beer, and remembered the big, chunky skewers, the spicy okmyeon and the yuzu pickled radish that was good enough to refill. For anyone who wants properly thick lamb skewers, Yangbokjeom is a Dongdaegu Station spot worth going back to.

Sadang date bar: yukhoe sushi on sweet shrimp rice at Cheonjan

Cheonjan (천잔) is an izakaya in the food alley off Sadang Station Exit 8 in Dongjak, Seoul, serving grade 1++ hanwoo yukhoe (seasoned raw Korean beef) and sake. On a second round, the writer skipped the set menu and ordered just the 1++ yukhoe and sweet shrimp, and the highlight was topping the rice served with the sweet shrimp with yukhoe to eat it like yukhoe sushi. Cheonjan is pleasantly dim and atmospheric, an easy recommendation for a date or blind date near Sadang Station.

Sadang Exit 8 gopchang grill with a waiting board: Bareun Hwangso

Bareun Hwangso Gopchang (바른황소곱창) is a beef gopchang (grilled beef intestine) restaurant on the restaurant alley side of Sadang Station Exit 8 in Dongjak, Seoul, and says it uses 100% hanwoo (Korean beef) intestines slaughtered the same day. After writing a name on the waiting board and waiting, the order was an assorted gopchang platter for two, beer and kkakdugi (radish kimchi) fried rice; the assorted platter cooked with seasoned chives and the fish cake soup loaded with bean sprouts stood out. Bareun Hwangso Gopchang is a strongly recommended beef gopchang spot for group dinners and work outings in Sadang, with fried rice to round off the meal.

Goseong-dong, Daegu pork BBQ: beating the weekend dinner rush, Sangnok

Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan Gui Goseong Branch is a coal-briquette pork BBQ restaurant in the Goseong-dong food alley of Buk-gu, Daegu, also a go-to drinking spot near Bukgucheong Station. Arriving right at the 5 p.m. weekend opening, the writer ordered the Dwaeji Hangeun set (600g of pork in six cuts, ₩35,000) and naengmyeon (cold noodles), and the spacious dining room filled up quickly by evening. Sangnok Hoegwan Goseong Branch and its Dwaeji Hangeun set are worth recommending to anyone who wants quality pork at good value.
