Modak Texas Barbecue Dongdaegu Branch is a Texas-style barbecue restaurant in the café alley across from Dongdaegu Station and Shinsegae Department Store in Dong-gu, Daegu. After stopping by Shinsegae on a special day, two of us visited a barbecue restaurant for the first time, arriving at opening time to order the 2-person Texas Platter set (₩57,000) and shrimp cream pasta (₩15,000). The portions were far bigger than expected and we ate until we were stuffed. With its exotic wood interior and a marshmallow dessert, Modak Texas Barbecue is a satisfying choice for a date or an anniversary meal.

Eating alone, the writer ordered the ₩9,000 sundae gukbap, which was packed with big pieces of meat and blood sausage with no gamey smell, plus a free bowl of rice about twice the size served elsewhere. With rice included in the ₩9,000 price and refills of rice and bone broth, Ungjin Dalseo Dwaeji Gukbap is a good-value pick for solo diners in Dalseo.

The writer ordered the steak & raw salmon rice bowl tempura set for 20,000 won: the yuzu salad was refreshing, the salmon was soft with no fishy taste, and the chili pepper, sweet pumpkin, enoki mushroom, lotus root and eggplant tempura stayed crisp to the end. Downtown Daegu Believe Heritage is a handmade burger restaurant in the Heritage shopping arcade in Suseong, Daegu, and is said to be the first Downtown branch in the Gyeongsang region. The writer ordered two Downtown Burger sets for takeout, ate them at home, and was especially pleased with the juicy yet crispy patty and the sturdy packaging. Galbi BBQ in Jongno, Daegu for summer stamina: garlic galbi, Jangjak

Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch (벽돌 생갈비 종로점) is a fresh galbi (unmarinated short rib) BBQ restaurant in Jongno, Jung-gu, Daegu, near Exit 1 of Jungangno Station. To recharge after the summer heat, the writer visited on a weekday evening and ordered 500g of Uiseong garlic galbi (58,000 won) with doenjang stew, mul naengmyeon (cold noodles) and steamed egg; staff grilled the galbi while brushing on extra garlic sauce, and a cypress-steamed dish came free. For tender galbi soaked in a pungent, sweet garlic marinade without doing the grilling yourself, Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch is a good fit.
