In short

Pho Bay Seogwipo Seohong-jeom is a Vietnamese pho restaurant in Seohong-dong, Seogwipo, Jeju, which moved there from Sinseogwipo. Hungry during a workday, the writer had two 1-person sets for lunch, mini beef pho with Hanoi fried rice and mini beef pho with charcoal-grilled fried rice; the rich, clean broth and the smoky Hanoi fried rice stood out. For anyone who wants pho and fried rice in one meal, the 1-person sets at Pho Bay Seogwipo Seohong-jeom are a perfect fit.

I was working at the shop and got so hungry from the morning on, so I spent ages debating lunch and ended up at Pho Bay Seogwipo Seohong-jeom!!! It used to be famous in the Sinseogwipo area and I'd heard it moved to Seohong-dong, so I was curious. The place is big and comfortable, and I think the food got even better!

The exterior looks tidy from the start, and being able to park right in front made the visit easy. When you hunt for a Seogwipo lunch spot, so many places have awkward parking, but Pho Bay Seohong-jeom is easy to get to and easy to park at. Love it!!!

The tables are spaced widely and the ceiling is high, so it feels comfortable, and the air conditioning was blasting even on a hot day.

From outside the place looked a bit small, but once we went in it was really spacious and comfortable. Wide table spacing, high ceiling, and even though the weather was like midsummer at lunchtime, the AC was blasting and it was so cool!!

We went at an awkward time, but plenty of people were already eating, so I felt like we'd found a real gem.

Our two 1-person sets: mini pho with fried rice

We ordered two 1-person sets: mini beef pho + Hanoi fried rice, and mini beef pho + charcoal-grilled fried rice. Pho Bay Seohong-jeom has both 1-person and 2-person set menus.

We were so, so, so hungry from the morning, so we ordered two 1-person sets. Honestly, even at a Chinese restaurant I want fried rice along with my jjamppong, and since Pho Bay has 1-person and 2-person sets, I think it's a great place for a glutton like me, haha.

How is the mini beef pho at Pho Bay Seohong-jeom?

The mini beef pho!!! I thought a "mini" would be small, but it was the perfect amount to eat with fried rice.

Beef pho broth and meat at Pho Bay Seohong-jeom

The moment it arrived I tried the broth first: rich and clean... honestly it tasted just like the pho I had in Ho Chi Minh City. And I did think the portion might be a bit small? But once I added the bean sprouts it suddenly got really generous, haha. So true.

The crunchy texture made it even better.

Cilantro served on the side on request

The owner asked first if we wanted cilantro and brought it separately, and was so kind that I was really grateful. If you love cilantro, definitely add it!! It completes the local flavor.

How to eat pho with hoisin and chili sauce

I started plain, then mixed the hoisin sauce and chili sauce from the table, dipped the meat in it, and then put some into the broth. I think that's the number-one way to eat pho.

Beef pho broth made richer with mixed sauces

The broth suddenly gets richer and spicier and feels like a different dish. It was good already, but it gets even better toward the end. I really do prefer spicier, punchier flavors. Still, with Vietnamese pho, I think you should eat a third plain before mixing the sauce in, or it feels like a loss.

A chopstick-full of beef pho noodles at Pho Bay Seohong-jeom

It tasted just like the pho I had on my Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh trips, so I devoured it without a thought in my head! If my friends ask for a good Seogwipo pho place, I'll definitely tell them to go to Pho Bay Seohong-jeom.

Does the charcoal-grilled fried rice have plenty of meat?

The charcoal-grilled fried rice at Pho Bay Seohong-jeom has a subtle smoky aroma, and I was surprised by how much meat was in it.

It's nutty and salty, and the charcoal flavor keeps coming up so my spoon wouldn't stop. Eaten with the pho, the combination was really good.

How spicy is the Hanoi fried rice?

Spicy Hanoi fried rice at Pho Bay Seohong-jeom

The Hanoi fried rice was my favorite of everything we ordered that day!! The menu says it's spicy, so I was a little worried, but it was just the right kind of tasty spicy.

A spoonful of smoky Hanoi fried rice
Hanoi fried rice and beef pho set combination

It felt a little less spicy than Shin Ramyun, with a really strong smoky flavor, and the two blended so well!! When I go for Vietnamese pho I never pick things like the spicy seafood pho and always go for the most basic beef pho, so the spicy Hanoi fried rice with pho was just the right combo, I think! From now on I'm settling on this same order.

Self-serve side dish bar and the receipt event
