In short

Seowon Angil Hapjeong (서원안길 합정) is a café serving both meals and drinks on Jandari-ro 3-gil in Seogyo-dong, Mapo, Seoul, near Hapjeong Station Exit 3. Two people shared the medium-spicy Seowon Angil beef tteokbokki (spicy stir-fried rice cakes, ₩25,000) with chewy wheat rice cakes, minced beef and fried snacks, plus a blueberry hibiscus and a berry blush smoothie, and left very full. Visiting Seowon Angil Hapjeong, a café near Hapjeong Station

I was looking for somewhere near Hapjeong Station to have a meal and drinks together, and ended up at Seowon Angil Hapjeong (서원안길 합정). It's in Seogyo-dong, so it's a good pick when you have plans around Hapjeong or just want a meal in a nice space. This time I ordered the beef tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), which comes with a special sauce and beef, and two drinks.

What are the atmosphere and seating like at Seowon Angil Hapjeong?

How do the Seowon Angil beef tteokbokki taste and portion size compare?

Seowon Angil beef tteokbokki

The main dish this time was the Seowon Angil beef tteokbokki, ₩25,000. It's made-to-order tteokbokki stir-fried with beef in a special sauce to bring out the flavor, a bit different from the usual combination, so I was curious. I ordered it medium spicy.

Beef tteokbokki ordered medium spicy

How spicy is the medium-spicy wheat rice cake tteokbokki?

First, the rice cakes in the Seowon Angil beef tteokbokki are wheat-based (milttok), and I loved the chewy texture. I figured medium wouldn't be very hot, but a subtle kick crept up as I ate. That spiciness actually blended well with the beef flavor, so it never felt greasy and was easy to keep eating.

Above all, I liked that there was a generous amount of finely minced beef. Every bite of rice cake and sauce got extra beef flavor, which gave it a different charm from the tteokbokki I usually eat. The sauce clung to the rice cakes nicely, so I enjoyed it to the very end.

Fried snacks served with beef tteokbokki

Is the beef tteokbokki with fried snacks enough for two?

The beef tteokbokki alone was a good amount, but with the fried snacks added, the portion was considerable.

Even with just two of us, we were really full by the end. The portion is generous and packed with beef, so it's a satisfying way to have a meal. If you're looking for a restaurant in Seogyo-dong and are curious about something a little different from regular Korean snack food, I'd recommend this beef tteokbokki with chewy wheat rice cakes, a spicy sauce and beef ෆ

What does the blueberry hibiscus at Seowon Angil taste like?

The blueberry hibiscus I ordered alongside is ₩7,000. I drink hibiscus now and then, but blueberry hibiscus was a first for me, so I was curious.

The sweet blueberry flavor plus hibiscus's distinctive aroma made it smell good and taste good. Even though it was a combination I'd never tried, it suited my taste and went nicely with the meal.

After one taste I was so satisfied I'd want to order it again next time. If you want something different from coffee, you might try the blueberry hibiscus too ෆ

A drink to pair with spicy tteokbokki: the berry blush smoothie

The second drink was the berry blush smoothie, ₩8,500. I wanted something to soothe the heat of the beef tteokbokki, so I ordered it too. The berries' tang plus sweetness left my mouth feeling fresh, which I liked.

Especially when I took a sip of the berry blush smoothie between bites of tteokbokki, it calmed the spiciness and cleansed my palate. It's sweet yet tangy, so it pairs well with spicy dishes. If you're after something besides coffee at a café in Seogyo-dong, try the berry blush smoothie with a meal ෆ
