Sinnonhyeon jazz bar dinner course: scallop on Korean melon, Flat Nine

In short

Flat Nine is a live jazz dining bar on the 5th floor of a building between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station in Seocho, Seoul. The writer sat at a two-seat table facing the stage and ate the full dinner course, from welcome drink to dessert, while a jazz trio played live. The highlights were the scallop and salmon starter served on chamoe (Korean melon) and the white ragu pasta. The verdict: Flat Nine is an anniversary date spot well worth its live charge of 15,000 won per person.

If you're tired of the same old dates around Gangnam Station or Sinnonhyeon, here's an unusual date course! I'm introducing a place where you can enjoy live jazz together with a full course meal!

Introduction photo of Flat Nine, a live jazz dining bar in Sinnonhyeon

Today I want to introduce a live jazz dining spot that's perfect for a romantic day, like being the lead in a movie, right in the bustle of downtown Gangnam!

For a special anniversary or a day when you want some atmosphere, I really, truly recommend it as a Gangnam Station date course!! It's Flat Nine (플랫나인), where you can enjoy sweet live jazz and great dining together!

Where is Flat Nine in Sinnonhyeon?

Flat Nine is on the 5th floor of a building on Gangnam-daero 65-gil, between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station. Just follow the sign into the building.

We spotted the Flat Nine sign and headed into the building.

Flat Nine live jazz charge and how to book

For the live jazz at Flat Nine you pay a separate live charge of ₩15,000 per person. Going up to the 5th floor, I found the monthly live jazz schedule posted! The playing was great and the mood was lovely, so the money didn't feel wasted..!

Flat Nine is popular on weekends, so I recommend booking ahead on Catchtable!

What are the seats and restrooms like at Flat Nine?

Two-seaters facing the stage inside Flat Nine

Flat Nine has lots of two-seaters lined up neatly so you can watch the live jazz. We arrived a little early and grabbed the front seats for the performance, at a two-seater! There are plenty of tables sized just right for two, so on weekdays you can easily get a seat without a reservation.

Looking ahead from our seats, I could see a piano and drums. The restrooms are inside the venue, which was convenient, and they're separate for men and women. However, there's only one stall each, so you might have to wait a bit.

How is the Flat Nine dinner course served?

The Flat Nine dinner course comes in this order: welcome drink, salad, starter, pasta, steak, dessert. We ordered the course meal!

Tangy and sweet non-alcoholic welcome drink

Welcome drink, with a non-alcoholic option

The first thing in the Flat Nine course was the welcome drink. You can choose a non-alcoholic one, and it was tangy and sweet ✨!

Endive garden salad and bread

Second came the endive garden salad and bread. The salad combination was really good. The bread served with it was soft too, perfect for dipping in balsamic and olive oil!

Scallop and salmon starter on melon with lemon butter sauce

Scallop and salmon on Korean melon with lemon butter sauce

The Flat Nine starter was scallop and salmon on top of Korean melon (chamoe), served with what they said was a lemon butter sauce. It suited my taste so well, so delicious! The salmon had a smoky aroma, the ingredients were fresh and each tasted great on its own, and the lemon butter sauce was the kicker!

I once learned how to enjoy food: taste each ingredient one by one, then taste them combined with each other, and after that combine them with the sauce too. Melon, scallop, salmon and the sauce together.. everything was perfect.

Truffle-scented white ragu pasta

Next up was pasta! What we ordered was the white ragu pasta. Steam was rising~

The live jazz players also recommended the pasta at Flat Nine as really delicious. It has a truffle aroma, and even I, who don't much like truffle, enjoyed it. A rich sauce and perfectly cooked pasta! So good!

Medium-rare steak at Flat Nine

Medium-rare steak

Drumroll, finally the steak! The Flat Nine steak came medium rare! Isn't the plating so cute, haha!

Virgin frozen margarita with passion fruit

There was a non-alcoholic passion fruit drink, so I tried it. A virgin frozen margarita (passion fruit)! Go to a mojito place and have a Maldives~ (oh, our honeymoon destination happened to be the Maldives~) Sweet and tangy! Delicious!

Chocolate cake dessert with lettering at Flat Nine

Chocolate cake dessert and anniversary lettering

The last course was dessert! Chocolate cake and nuts came out, and we enjoyed it! If you look closely at the chocolate on the cake, it says "Flat Nine"! On top of that, they reportedly do lettering as a service if you ask for it on an anniversary.

Can you enjoy Flat Nine if it's your first live jazz?

At Flat Nine, a staff member explained how to enjoy jazz and the manners before the live jazz started, so even I, a first-timer, had a great time. The live jazz began in the middle of the course; they said it was the Kim Cheolsu Trio, and they played so well!

If an anniversary is coming up, stop by Flat Nine at least once!
