Magok Korean restaurant before a movie: soy cockles & rice, Mikodam

Mikodam Magok-Balsan Branch is a Korean restaurant with private rooms near Balsan Station and Magok Station in Gangseo, Seoul, serving set meals built around seaweed soup and seasoned cockles. After Sunday church service and before seeing Toy Story 5, a family ordered the 3-person set plus 1 extra bowl of rice: soy sauce cockles, spicy vinegar cockles, beef seaweed soup, grilled mackerel, a medium beef jeon (pan-fried beef) and 10 side dishes. Even the daughter who is picky about rice approved, making Mikodam Magok-Balsan Branch a generous, easy-parking spot for a family lunch.

Mugyo-dong bakery café for a flat white at the window bar: Lemangdoré

Lemangdoré Gwanghwamun is a large bakery café in Mugyo-dong, behind Seoul City Hall in Jung-gu, Seoul, and it uses all three floors. On a return visit after a long break, the writer ordered a flat white at the kiosk, picked a pain au chocolat and a choco baguette from the showcase, and ate at the 2nd-floor window bar table; the choco baguette was better than expected. Skip the weekday lunch rush and Lemangdoré Gwanghwamun, furnished with Fritz Hansen pieces, is a good place to spend a quiet afternoon.

Jonggak izakaya lunch with kaisendon and chicken nanban: Suksseong

Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch is an aged-sashimi izakaya on the 3rd floor of a building on Samil-daero 19-gil near Jonggak Station in Jongno, Seoul, serving lunch dishes such as kaisendon (sashimi rice bowl) made with aged sashimi. The writer ordered the special kaisendon and the chicken nanban set, first wrapping the kaisendon sashimi in seaweed and then mixing the bowl with yolk-soy sauce, and found the chicken nanban surprisingly good too. With every seat privately partitioned, Suksseong Susan suits Jonggak office workers at lunch and anyone who struggles to find time for dinner.

Burger restaurant by Seonyudo Station: kids pick toppings, BAS Burger

BAS Burger Seonyudo is a handmade burger restaurant right outside Exit 4 of Seonyudo Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, where dine-in guests get unlimited James Gam potato chip refills. Over the Constitution Day holiday weekend, the writer walked over for lunch with the kids, and each person picked their own burger: a BAS Burger without cheese, a Double BAS Burger and a Hawaiian burger. The kids ate well, making BAS Burger Seonyudo a Seonyudo burger spot worth returning to for weekend family meals.
