Gangnam decaf café for evenings, caramel cheese pie: Upper and Under
In short
Upper and Under (어퍼앤언더) is a large three-floor terrace café, spanning B1 to 2F, on Gangnam-daero 102-gil between Gangnam and Sinnonhyeon stations in Seoul. On an evening visit, the writer had an einspänner switched to decaf for an extra 500 won, plus lemon balm tea, caramel cheese pie and a plain financier; the chewy cream and the sweet-salty pie were the highlights. Upper and Under is a good fit if you want terrace desserts at night without worrying about caffeine.

This is my review of Upper and Under, a terrace café where every drink can be made decaf. After a good meal nearby, I walked out and spotted a eye-catching, atmospheric building right across the street! Dessert and coffee after a meal is a must-do, right? So I headed over without a second thought, and here's my honest review of Upper and Under near Gangnam Station!
What are the exterior and interior of Upper and Under like?

Upper and Under is a standalone building that looks like a converted house. Big windows, warm red brick and atmospheric lighting make the exterior stand out from far away!

At night, once the lights come on, the café looks even more romantic and pretty ✨ There are photo spots all the way from the entrance, perfect for a shot you'll want to keep.

How many floors does Upper and Under have, and where do you order?
Upper and Under is a large café with three floors, from the first basement level up to the 2nd floor, and you need to head up the stairs to the 2nd floor to order!

Natural light from the big windows, warm white furniture and a wood-toned interior come together for a warm, relaxed feel.

The outdoor terrace at Upper and Under
The biggest plus of Upper and Under is the outdoor terrace!

With cool weather like these days, it's a perfect spot to have a coffee in the crisp autumn breeze.
What are the menu and prices at Upper and Under, and how much is decaf?

At Upper and Under, you can switch any drink to decaf for just ₩500 extra. The menu has a huge range: plain Americano, smooth einspänner (coffee topped with thick cream), cold brew, and matcha and pistachio cream lattes! And good news for people like me who visit at night or are sensitive to caffeine: being able to switch to decaf is a really big plus here!
- Einspänner (switched to decaf): ₩8,500
- Lemon balm (herbal tea): ₩6,500
- Caramel cheese pie (2): ₩7,200 each
- Plain financier: ₩3,800
How does the decaf einspänner at Upper and Under taste?

At last, our carefully made drinks and desserts arrived!

The decaf einspänner (₩8,500) had thick, rich cream and I was really satisfied. As someone who truly loves einspänner, the cream is the most important thing when I judge one! Thin cream is such a letdown, but the cream at Upper and Under is dense and heavy, and it was nutty and sweet enough that I loved it even just scooped up with a spoon! It was my first time trying a decaf einspänner, and the bittersweet decaf coffee base under the heavy cream blended together perfectly.

Lemon balm tea, great for the evening
The lemon balm tea (₩6,500) is a signature tea at this Sinnonhyeon Station café, and I picked it because coffee felt a little heavy in the evening! A subtle lemon scent mixed with a calming herbal aroma, and it was a gentle, fragrant drink that's easy to enjoy at night with no stimulation.

Are the caramel cheese pie and financier at Upper and Under worth trying?
⭐️ Recommended ⭐️ I really suggest trying the caramel cheese pie (₩7,200) and the plain financier (₩3,800). I came late in the evening and many desserts in the display case were already gone, which was a shame, but from the quality of what was left I could tell right away that the bread here is just really good!
I couldn't finish the caramel cheese pie at the café, so I took it home and warmed it briefly in the air fryer... and it was the ultimate sweet-and-salty combo.. The nutty cheese, the sweet caramel and the crisp pie crust work together, so I recommend you try it!
Is there an event at Upper and Under?

When I visited, Upper and Under was giving one free financier for a Naver receipt review. If you visit, don't forget to join in and enjoy it! Crisp outside and moist inside, it goes perfectly with coffee!!
Q&A before visiting Upper and Under
Does Upper and Under have its own parking?
No, Upper and Under has no dedicated parking lot ❌. I recommend public transport, and if you drive, please use a public or paid parking lot near the café!
Are there enough desserts if you go in the evening?
If you visit Upper and Under late in the evening, popular pies and cakes may sell out early! It's a Gangnam Station café known for its desserts, so if you want the full dessert lineup, I recommend going during the day.
