Sokcho market mulhoe shop: haebok mulhoe for a hot summer, Hwanggeum

In short

Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip (속초황금물회횟집) is a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) and live sashimi restaurant at the entrance of Sokcho Jungang Market in Sokcho, Gangwon. Trusting the clean fish tanks, the writer took Hwanggeum Haebok Mulhoe, generously loaded with sea cucumber and abalone, back to the lodging, and the buckwheat makguksu noodles and canned broth made it easy to carry. On a hot summer trip to Sokcho, a cold bowl of mulhoe from Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip was a satisfying choice.

A hot summer trip to Sokcho feels incomplete without sweet, tangy, ice-cold mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), so I stopped by Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip (속초황금물회횟집), a Sokcho Jungang Market favorite ✨

Where is Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip, and can you eat in?

Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip is right at the entrance of Sokcho Jungang Market, so it fits neatly before or after browsing the market. There are tables inside the shop too, so you can sit down and eat comfortably :)

What makes the mulhoe at Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip different?

The shop cuts fresh live fish the moment you order, so the mulhoe has a wonderfully chewy texture. Another special touch: instead of the usual thin wheat noodles (somyeon), it comes with buckwheat noodles (memil makguksu)!

The broth also comes in a can, so there's no worry about leaks while you carry it, and it was much easier to eat back at our lodging.

Every menu item can be taken away. Besides mulhoe, there's sashimi, abalone porridge, rice bowls, live fish sashimi, seasoned webfoot octopus (ggolttugi) and seasoned flounder sashimi, so you can pick what suits you. After some deliberation, we chose the Hwanggeum Haebok Mulhoe, loaded with fresh raw fish plus sea-scented sea cucumber and abalone!

Because the live fish and seafood are prepared the moment you order, there may be a short wait for takeout, just so you know :)

Why I check the fish tanks when choosing a raw fish restaurant

One thing I always check when choosing a raw fish restaurant is the condition of the tanks. If even the parts everyone can see are neglected, I wonder how bad the parts you can't see must be. Every corner of Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip was spotless, which made this Sokcho Jungang Market spot even easier to trust!

Eating the haebok mulhoe as takeout at our lodging

The haebok mulhoe was packed neatly in a cooler bag and made it to our lodging safe and sound, haha. Piles of fresh vegetables, chewy raw fish, and sea-scented sea cucumber and abalone come together into a hearty bowl with a crunchy, chewy texture that's just wild. Loaded with sea cucumber and abalone, this one bowl let me really taste the freshness of the Sokcho sea!

Nothing beats this in the summer 🩵✨ Whenever I crave cold mulhoe at Sokcho Jungang Market, Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip will probably be the first place I think of :)

Is Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip worth recommending for a Sokcho trip?

The sweet, tangy, cold broth, fresh raw fish and assorted seafood blended so well that I never got tired of it, right down to the last bite. It suits hot weather especially well, so if you're planning a trip to Sokcho in Gangwon, I recommend dropping by Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip at least once!

It was such a satisfying meal that next time I'd like to order other dishes too 🥹🥹 A day of properly enjoying fresh seafood ✨
