No-break-time Hamdeok black pork, 4pm terrace nape cut: Jeju Samchun
In short
Jeju Samchun is a black pork restaurant a two-minute walk from Hamdeok Beach in Jeju. Because there is no break time, a 4pm walk-in got a terrace table facing the dol hareubang (stone grandfather statue) garden and the two-person Jocha Set 500g of pork neck, pork belly and nape meat, grilled piece by piece by the staff. Between the grapevine smoke and the closing kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew), Jeju Samchun makes a strong last meal of a Jeju trip.

Can you eat at 4pm? Jeju Samchun has no break time
Jeju Samchun Hamdeok Beach Black Pork runs straight through from noon to 11pm with no break time. On a trip, meal times can get all over the place. You eat breakfast you'd normally skip, you eat way too much dessert... So I ended up showing up around 4pm, and I was so relieved the staff still welcomed me with no break time in the way! I almost had to leave Jeju without eating black pork at all.

We got a spot practically on the terrace, looking out at the dol hareubang and the garden. September weather in Jeju is just too good ✨

For two: the Jocha Set 500g of neck, belly and nape meat
Jeju Samchun specializes in Jeju black pork, serving popular cuts like pork neck, pork belly, jowl, and skirt meat. Among these, set menus like the Jocha Set, Samchun Set, and Hareubang Set offer great value. Since there were two of us, we ordered the Jocha Set, which comes with a 500g mix of pork neck, pork belly, and more.

At the entrance, I could see a certificate for Jeju black pork and a 300-hour low-temperature aging chamber.

Side dishes and sauces served with the black pork
Along with the order came side dishes to boost the flavor of the meat. Clockwise from top left: pollack roe, pickled radish wrap, shredded scallion baek-kimchi (white kimchi), seaweed, and cucumber salad — every single one paired well with the meat and tasted great.

Salt breadcrumbs, hairtail intestine sauce, and special soy sauce — every single condiment was clearly made with care, so I'd recommend trying them all rather than skipping anything.
When do you taste the grapevine smoke?
Jeju black pork smoked over grapevine wood
The meat that showed up that day boosted my happiness meter ✨ I think the source of the smoke was actually grapevine wood — I didn't quite register it when it was set on fire, but once the meat started grilling, this distinctive woody scent came through and I realized, 'oh, they really did smoke this over grapevine wood.' So cool!

Even the raw meat looked delicious — is that just because I'm secretly a pig? Sigh...

Thick-cut pork belly, pork neck, and even nape meat — supposedly the more savory part of the neck — arrived neatly plated.

Can a spread like this really go without a drink? 😌

Jeju black pork plus Hallasan soju — there's no better combo to wrap up a trip with.

The staff grill every cut at your table
One of the biggest perks of Jeju Samchun Hamdeok Beach Black Pork is that staff grill all the meat for you. Black pork tastes best cut thick and eaten in big pieces, which actually makes it tricky to grill properly — but a skilled staff member explained each cut and how to eat it while grilling it for us, which was so convenient and nice.
Since the cuts are thick, it took a little while to cook through, but with a bit of patience you get to taste some seriously good black pork.

Once the pork belly and neck were cooked through to some degree,

the relatively thin nape meat goes on the grill next, as the finishing act.

Which sauce to use, and in what order
First bite: pork belly plus salt. Second: pork neck plus seaweed plus soy sauce plus shredded scallions. Third: meat plus pollack roe. There's real enjoyment in tasting so many different combinations,

and honestly, I don't usually go for the fatty parts, but at a good Jeju black pork restaurant, even the fat turns out chewy and delicious — why is that? Grapevine smoke plus the savoriness of black pork, dipped deep into piping-hot anchovy sauce, and I'm just so happy ✨

Finishing the meal with kimchi jjigae
And the finishing kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) was perfect too. Honestly I hadn't planned on eating rice at all, but the baek-kimchi we'd had with the meat was so good that I ordered the kimchi jjigae with high expectations too. It came with a whole thick chunk of pork, simmered down slowly with the kimchi until soft and tender — a textbook example of a great kimchi jjigae, if I do say so myself...

I'd recommend Jeju Samchun, the black pork restaurant I found near Hamdeok Beach in Jeju!
