Solo-dining tonkatsu in Hongdae, kimchi katsu nabe: Katsu Monster
In short
Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch is a thick-cut tonkatsu restaurant in the Miro-gil alley of Yeonnam-dong, Seoul, about five minutes on foot from Hongik University Station Exit 3. Dining alone at the wall solo seats, the writer ordered kimchi katsu nabe (pork cutlet in kimchi hot pot) with a zero-sugar cola, dipping the thick katsu in the spicy broth and topping it with sharp kimchi for a warming meal that never felt greasy. Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch works just as easily for a solo lunch as for a date.

Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch, where the thickness and juiciness of the katsu are no joke.
On a day when I'd been running around since morning and my stomach was completely caved in by lunchtime..😶 I was looking for something filling when a photo of a thick pork cutlet caught my eye, and I rushed straight over to eat!
This place is famous in Yeonnam-dong for its thick tonkatsu — apparently there's even a wait in the evenings..! I heard it's also a popular Yeonnam-dong date spot. I visited alone this time, but there were seats made specifically for solo dining, so it was less awkward than I expected :) Let me introduce Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch, where I had a nice filling meal!

How long is the walk from Hongik University Station? The storefront
Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch is about a 5-minute walk from Hongik University Station Exit 3. It's tucked inside the Yeonnam-dong Miro-gil alley, so you find it by walking straight into the alley from the main street. It's close enough to Hongik University Station that it was easy to walk over while looking for Hongdae restaurants.

The exterior really gave off tonkatsu-restaurant vibes. There were also menu photos posted outside, so I could browse and think about what to order before going in. There was outdoor seating near the entrance too — I imagine it'd be nice to sit outside and eat leisurely once the weather cools down :)
What are the solo seats like inside Katsu Monster?
Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch has seats along the wall made for eating comfortably alone. Since I was visiting solo that day, I was personally curious whether it'd be a good spot for eating alone, and once I went in, it turned out to be exactly that kind of layout..💛 Even if you're still a bit awkward about eating alone, it's easy to sit and eat here without feeling self-conscious.

The restaurant looked like it could seat roughly 15–20 people, with a small but clean atmosphere. There seemed to be a lot of delivery orders too, since delivery riders kept coming and going. Seems like it's a popular delivery spot as well :) Everything needed for the meal was already set up at the seats, which was convenient, and ordering was easy via tablet.
The menu: why kimchi katsu nabe instead of cheese tonkatsu
I originally planned to order cheese tonkatsu, but then kimchi katsu nabe was right there in front of my eyes..haha. I immediately dropped my original plan and went with instinct — ordered kimchi katsu nabe‼️

Since this is Hongdae, a lot of foreign tourists visit too, so there was a nicely organized guide in several languages on how to enjoy tonkatsu. Wi-Fi could be connected right away via QR code, and a receipt review event was running as well, so keep that in mind if you visit :)
What does the kimchi katsu nabe taste like?
- ✅ Kimchi katsu nabe
- ✅ Zero-sugar cola

Pretty hearty just from the looks, right? They say this place is famous for how thick the katsu is, and honestly it looked delicious even before I took a bite..✨

The color is honestly amazing..

They drizzled sauce generously over the salad, and it was time to dig in properly!

The thickness of the katsu is seriously solid, right? Looking at it up close, I instantly understood why it's known for being so thick. I tried the katsu soaked moist in the nabe broth topped with a piece of kimchi, and it was spicy with deep savory flavor that really hit the spot. The kimchi had just the right tangy kick for a nabe, which meant the katsu didn't feel greasy at all — it was delicious!

Personally, I thought this would make a great hangover-cure meal too :) It has the kind of flavor you'd crave when you want a spicy broth the day after drinking. And of course, thickness matters for katsu, right? The meat was thick enough that you could really feel the bite. Eating it together with the kimchi nabe broth, the rice just kept disappearing..👍 Highly recommend if you're looking for tonkatsu in Yeonnam-dong!

After finishing every last bite, a glass of zero-sugar cola was a must. Had a refreshing sip and wrapped up a satisfying meal~ The end!
A Yeonnam-dong restaurant that was great for a filling meal, with thick katsu plus a spicy kimchi nabe added on top!

- ✅ A place known for delicious thick katsu
- ✅ Recommended for a Yeonnam-dong date
