In short

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a Korean restaurant specializing in braised and grilled mackerel on Iljuseo-ro, near the Jungmun tourist complex in Seogwipo, Jeju. Visiting with her mom, the writer ordered aged-kimchi mackerel ssam-bap (rice with leafy wraps) with abalone stone-pot rice and fatty grilled mackerel with abalone stone-pot rice. She also filled up on jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) and japchae (glass noodles) from the self-serve bar, but missed the abalone porridge, which ran out early. Most people eat galchijorim (braised hairtail) on a Jeju trip, but this time I wanted something different, haha. So to properly try the braised mackerel that's famous even among locals, I went to Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, a place worth visiting in Jeju.

In the end, I could see exactly why Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is so well known on Jeju. If you're looking for a good restaurant to visit on the island, you'll really be satisfied here!

Where is Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap? Location and 3,500-pyeong garden

This Jeju restaurant is close to the Jungmun tourist complex and sits right on the main road, so it wasn't hard to find. There's a large parking lot, so I didn't have to worry about parking at all.

What impressed me most was the roughly 3,500-pyeong garden — it felt less like a restaurant and more like a garden café.

The flowers and trees were beautifully kept, perfect for a stroll before or after the meal, and with the good weather it was also great for photos! My mom loved getting some really nice shots there.

Inside Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap: seating and celebrity autographs

Walking inside this Seogwipo restaurant, it was much more spacious than I expected! The tables had plenty of room between them and there were lots of seats, so it seemed great for family meals, groups, or gatherings. There were separate men's and women's restrooms inside, which was convenient too.

The walls were covered in autographs from famous celebrities, and seeing the traces of their visits made me even more excited.

Here's the menu at this Jeju restaurant. It had a variety of options like aged kimchi mackerel ssam-bap (wrap rice), fatty grilled mackerel, abalone porridge, and grilled abalone, and each table had a tablet, which made ordering easy.

After ordering, the basic side dishes were set up: kkakdugi (radish kimchi), salad, cucumber and bean sprout salad, and gim (seaweed), all served neatly.

There was a self-serve bar in the middle of the restaurant, so we could freely help ourselves, which was convenient.

Besides the basic side dishes already served, there were wrap vegetables and various other fresh side dishes ready to go.

I was surprised that the self-serve bar even had jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) and japchae (glass noodle stir-fry)! There was also abalone porridge, but it had already sold out early — I'll have to come earlier next time.

Once we gathered up all the side dishes from the self-serve bar, it became a really hearty spread. Honestly, you could finish a whole bowl of rice with just this, right? Total rice thief.

How is the aged-kimchi mackerel ssam-bap with abalone stone-pot rice?

The signature aged kimchi mackerel dish was overwhelming just to look at. My mouth was watering just from the visual.

Aged kimchi mackerel ssam-bap set for two

The aged kimchi came out whole. We definitely ordered the portion for two, but is this really the right amount of kimchi?! It was seriously huge!

Underneath the kimchi there was a generous amount of mackerel. Even just looking at it, you could tell the flesh was thick and plump.

There was barely any fishy smell, and the flesh was really moist. The seasoning wasn't overpowering either, so I kept reaching for more.

Eating the mackerel and aged kimchi together was such an amazing combination! And like I said, the portion was so generous it was almost too much for two of us to finish!

The abalone stone-pot rice served alongside was satisfying too! Inside the stone pot were abalone and seaweed, and since the abalone's innards were included, you could really feel that rich, savory depth.

There was plenty of abalone, and it wasn't chewy at all — soft enough that anyone from kids to adults could enjoy it without difficulty. Honestly, just eating the rice alone felt packed with nutrition.

The fatty grilled mackerel with abalone stone-pot rice was satisfying too. The outside was grilled to a nice golden brown, and the mackerel was really big.

The mackerel was moist and tender, plain yet savory at the same time. Squeezing a bit of lemon on top brought out even more flavor. It was delicious on its own, but even better paired with the abalone stone-pot rice!

Would I go back to Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap?

Out of all the restaurants I visited on this Jeju trip, this was the most memorable one. The spacious parking lot, comfortable interior, food good enough to be featured on TV, and the garden to stroll through afterward — every part of it was satisfying.

If you're looking for a good restaurant to try during a Jungmun, Jeju trip, check out Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap. Whether you go with friends, a partner, or your parents, everyone will be happy! I'd 100% go back.
