Why MUG in Ulju-gun, Ulsan works for a café visit with a baby

I went to MUG, a large café in Ulju-gun, Ulsan, on a hot summer day. With the weather being so brutal lately, I was trying to figure out where to take my baby, and I ended up looking for a large café where we could spend time comfortably indoors. Being a big café, the space felt more spacious than I expected, with none of that cramped feeling — good for visiting with a child.

I think the best thing about a large café is, well, the large space. The tables are spaced fairly generously and there's fun in just looking around the café, so instead of grabbing a coffee and leaving right away, it was nice to slowly browse and spend time there.

Visiting a café with a baby usually means being on edge in a cramped space, but since this place has real scale, we could stay much more relaxed. If you're planning an outing with your kid around Eonyang or Ulju-gun in Ulsan, I think this is a place worth stopping by at least once.

The high ceilings give it an open, airy feeling, and with all the people around there was some noise — but maybe because of the ceiling height, the sound echoed into something like white noise, which actually seemed to help people focus. That's probably why there were quite a few people doing solo work there.

At MUG you pay at the counter, and we ordered an iced americano and milk. The staff were genuinely kind.

Just seeing that baby chairs are provided tells you this is a kid-friendly café.

What bread does MUG bake, and how good is it?

MUG had a nice variety of bread on offer, which I appreciated. Sometimes you go to a café and it feels like a waste to just have a drink and leave, but the bread here was good enough that it could easily double as a simple meal. Moving around with a baby, it's sometimes tricky to time meals properly, so being able to have good bread and coffee together as a stand-in for a meal was convenient.

The bread all looked appetizing, so there was fun in choosing, and eating it with coffee made for a good snack. My baby loves bread too, so it was great to share.

The quality felt like a proper specialty bakery rather than a café. Prices were reasonable and everything looked delicious.

There was even a certificate on display saying the bread is made with good butter.

A lot of places just have plain water, but here there were two options — grapefruit water and lemon water — a nice touch.

Salt bread ₩3,500 and real corn bread ₩6,500: how they taste

Our order arrived. I'd asked for the milk to be just warmed to a comfortable level, and it turned out perfect for my baby to drink. And of course, the iced americano — you can't skip that.

We tried the salt bread (₩3,500) and the real corn bread (₩6,500). Both were really nutty and tasty, more than I expected. Not too sweet and easy to eat without feeling heavy — I'd recommend both.

We also took home a chocolate cookie. It was ₩7,000, but the portion was generous and the quality was high.

The story behind the MUG building and its mini gallery

MUG was designed after the big wildfire that hit the Ulsan area, with the interior symbolically reflecting that painful memory so it wouldn't be forgotten. Just as everyone carries some painful memory, this café was created with the intention of not forgetting that sad memory, but sharing and healing together in this space.

There was also a mini gallery space. Inside there's even a smartphone photo-printing machine, and quite a few people were using it. This is the front entrance, though we actually came in through the back door.

The one letdown: too hot to walk MUG's outdoor trail

There was one part of the visit that felt a bit of a shame, personally. There's a walking trail around the café, and if the weather had been cooler, I think we would have spent time at the café and gone for a walk too. Being able to stroll around slowly outside, rather than staying inside the whole time, seems like one of this place's strengths.

But the day we visited was the middle of summer, and it was seriously hot. 😭 Just stepping outside for a moment made the heat hit hard, so I couldn't bring myself to even attempt the trail, and we ended up spending the whole time inside the café.

If the weather had been just a little cooler, we would have walked the trail with our baby and taken in the surroundings slowly — that part was a bit of a letdown. But it made me think I'd like to come back in spring or autumn, when the weather is nice, and properly explore the trail next time.

Overall, this is a large café where you can relax in a spacious setting and enjoy good bread, making it a fine place to visit with a baby. Even without doing anything special, the sheer size of the café made it fun just to look around, and the bread was good enough to double as a simple meal.

If you're driving or out for an outing around Ulju-gun, Ulsan, I'd recommend stopping by to rest with coffee and bread.
