Jongno 3-ga bakery on a museum walk: garlic & milk cream bread, Munhwa

In short

Munhwa Bakery (문화제빵) is a takeout-only bakery in an Ikseon-dong alley near Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station in Seoul. On the way to a contemporary art museum in Jongno, the writer followed the smell of bread into Munhwa Bakery, bought coffee bread, garlic bread, milk cream bread and walnut bread, and tasted them one by one on a park bench. All four were not too sweet and felt carefully made, and the garlic bread showed exactly why it is Munhwa Bakery's signature item.

The atmosphere of Munhwa Bakery in an Ikseon-dong alley

Munhwa Bakery sign and exterior in an Ikseon-dong alley

Walking through the Ikseon-dong alleys, I spotted a small, pretty sign that caught my eye right away. Munhwa Bakery blends perfectly with the hanok (traditional Korean house) vibe, so my steps stopped on their own as I passed.

The shop isn't big, but it's really tidy and nicely put together.

It's takeout only, so it's not a place to linger, but even a short stop was enough to put me in a good mood because the space is so pretty.

What breads does Munhwa Bakery have?

I wanted to grab everything, but I held myself back and settled on coffee bread, garlic bread, milk cream bread and walnut bread, haha.

Munhwa Bakery sells only bread baked the same day

Notice that Munhwa Bakery sells only bread baked the same day

Munhwa Bakery mixes its dough by hand every morning and sells only bread baked that day. Leftover bread isn't thrown away; it's reportedly all donated to children without enough meals, seniors living alone, free meal centers and social welfare facilities.

It really impressed me that they don't just make delicious bread but also share it warmly. That's exactly why I want to support them more and come back again.

Garlic bread: lightly crisp outside, soft inside

I opened the garlic bread first, and the moment I opened the bag a rich garlic smell burst out.

Biting in, the outside was gently crisp and the inside was really soft. It wasn't harsh, yet the garlic flavor spread deeply, and I kept reaching for more.

Now I totally understand why everyone who comes to Munhwa Bakery grabs the garlic bread, haha.

Coffee bread: packed with sweet coffee cream

Walnut bread: nutty and not too sweet

The more I chewed, the more the nutty walnut flavor filled my mouth, with a plain, mellow charm. It isn't very sweet, so it's easy to enjoy without feeling heavy.

If you're exploring Ikseon-dong, strolling Seosunra-gil or visiting Changdeokgung Palace, definitely work Munhwa Bakery into the route. Being takeout only, it was really convenient to eat while walking around the neighborhood or take home. If you come to Jongno, I recommend stopping by once:)
