Yeonnam-dong bakery: buttery salt soboro and bread-crust rusk, Mandong
In short
Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch (만동제과 연남점) is a bakery at 32 Yeonhui-ro, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, in the Hongdae–Yeonnam-dong area and a popular stop for bakery hoppers. Hooked by the garlic baguette on an earlier visit, the writer came back for walnut bread, Ssukddeok Ssukddeok (mugwort rice cake bread), salt soboro and chestnut bread, plus toast-crust rusk, with each bread individually wrapped by the staff. The verdict: Mandong Jegwa's salt soboro, full of buttery hollows inside, was the clear favorite.

Inside Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch

I fell for the garlic baguette here last time, so today I came back to Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch to try other breads. Mandong Jegwa's signature item is definitely the garlic baguette — it's so popular they even sell it on their Smart Store. The moment I walked in, the smell of delicious bread was everywhere 𓂃꙳⋆

4 ordered breads, individually packed

• Ordered menu Walnut Mugwort rice cake Salt sobolu Chestnut bread
So thoughtful of them to individually pack each and every one 💗
Walnut bread

This delicious walnut bread is studded with nutty walnuts. Thanks to the generous filling, it's packed full of nutty flavor. The bread itself is chunky, and paired with the nuts it's savory and mild — great with milk, and I think adults would love it too.
Salt sobolu

Salt sobolu The surface is covered in crispy sobolu (crumble) topping. You know that sweet, crunchy sobolu crumb topping, right? ·₊˚

And inside, there's a whole butter cave. It feels like a mix between a salt bread and a sobolu bread — full of buttery flavor, and the sobolu part is genuinely delicious 💗 As a salt bread lover, I fully approve of this combo. This was probably my number one pick .ᐟ
Chestnut bread

The chestnut bread is really large, and Mandong Jegwa's breads are all reasonably priced too.

Cut it in half and it's stuffed generously with chestnuts. The big chunks of chestnut make it very filling, and the bread itself was moist and soft with zero dryness. Since it's so large, it works well as a meal replacement — definitely recommend it if you love chestnuts ❤︎
Mugwort rice cake bread

As someone with grandma-level taste, I had to grab this mugwort rice cake (ssukttok-ssukttok) bread. The moment I took it out of the bag, the fragrant mugwort smell filled the air.

Full of mugwort flavor, this one is a direct hit for grandma-taste lovers. The top is covered with nutty almond slices, and inside it has a sticky, chewy texture — like a mix of rice cake and bread, which makes it even tastier. All grandma-taste people, gather round .ᐟ 💭
Toast crust rusk

This is the rusk I grabbed last, made from the crust ends of sliced bread. It was also super cheap and great as a snack. Who knew the crust ends of sliced bread could taste this good .ᐟ Not hard at all, just the right amount of crispy, and sweet enough to be addictive — I kept reaching for more.

Bakery-hopping in Yeonnam-dong, would I go back?
Mandong Jegwa is a great bakery for bakery-hopping. It's located in trendy Yeonnam-dong, so it's easy to swing by anytime. From the famous, aromatic garlic baguette to all the different breads — everything was delicious, so I'll be coming back to grab takeout again and again . . 💖
