Jocheon sea-view Korean restaurant, mild mackerel: Jeju Seom Godeungeo

Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap (제주섬고등어쌈밥) is an ocean-view Korean restaurant specializing in mackerel ssambap (rice with leafy wraps), on the Hamdeok coast in Jocheon-eup, Jeju. After a morning of sightseeing, the writer had the kimchi-braised mackerel ssambap, packed with big pieces of mackerel, over rice and wrapped in leaves. Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap is a good stop when you want a hearty, warm Korean meal instead of black pork or raw fish.

Jeju Airport café comparing matcha oreum and hoji oreum: Dobana

Dobana is a tea house café near Jeju Airport at 29 Seosa-ro, Jeju City, with plenty of parking, a spacious interior, a reservation-only space called Doban's Garden (도반의 정원) and private rooms. Right after a meal, the writer ordered matcha oreum, hoji oreum, a banana dessert and cold brew at Dobana, and the nutty, slightly chocolatey hoji oreum tasted better than the matcha oreum. If you prefer tea to coffee or love matcha desserts, Dobana's matcha oreum and hoji oreum are worth trying side by side.

Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong is an oranda (sweet puffed-grain clusters) and gwajul (Korean puffed-grain cracker) shop near Gates 2 and 9 of Dongmun Market in Jeju. The writer arrived at the 9am opening, watched the oranda being made, and tried the bulk yuzu oranda, yuzu gwajul and Udo peanut oranda. The soft yuzu oranda, with its strong yuzu aroma, stood out most, making Cheongchuni Oranda a good stop for buying souvenirs early in the morning.

Mokdong seafood restaurant, off-menu sea squirt set: Jumak Haemulchon

Jumak Haemulchon (주막해물촌) is a seafood restaurant near exit 3 of Mokdong Station in Yangcheon, Seoul. On the owner's recommendation, the order became a sea squirt, whelk and octopus set, with sea squirt that isn't on the menu, and because everything was caught from the tank and prepared on the spot, the sea squirt had no fishy smell at all. Even diners sensitive to fishy smells may find Jumak Haemulchon worth a return visit for the sea squirt alone.

Veggie-packed chicken kebab at Savoy City DMC, Seoul: Zilhal Bros

Zilhal Bros Sangam is a casual New York-style over rice and kebab restaurant on the 1st floor of Building B at Savoy City DMC in Mapo, Seoul. Two diners ordered the combo rice, chicken kebab, steak and fries, and a zero-sugar cola from the kiosk; the combo rice let them alternate between mild lamb and tender chicken, and the chicken kebab stood out for its generous vegetables and especially tasty sauce. For a light Sangam lunch that still covers meat and vegetables, the combo rice and chicken kebab pairing at Zilhal Bros Sangam fits well.

Ganghwa duck restaurant serving 300g per person: Deok Ori Jumulleok

Deok Ori Jumulleok Ganghwa Main Branch is a duck jumulleok (spicy stir-fried duck) restaurant on Manisan-ro in Gilsang-myeon, Ganghwa, Incheon. One serving is 300g of duck, pre-seared over charcoal briquettes and served with a potato pancake cut into four pieces and a mild soy dipping sauce, with fried rice stirred into the leftover sauce at the end. The smoky, tender duck and the generous portion made this a meal worth remembering.
