Oreumak Garden Jungmun Main Branch is a 40-year-old black pork grill restaurant in the Jungmun resort area of Seogwipo, Jeju. The dry-aged black pork half-portion for two (480g) costs 58,000 won and brings three cuts — bone-in ribeye, pork jowl and pork neck — grilled at the table by the staff, with steamed egg and clam soup on the side and Jeju's Hallasan makgeolli (rice wine) to drink. Oreumak Garden is the place to taste the concentrated aroma and springy texture that only dry-aged black pork gives you.

Marijoa Seogwipo Jungmun Branch is a horse meat restaurant near the Jungmun tourist complex in Seogwipo, Jeju, designated by the Jeju Provincial Government's Livestock Policy Division as an edible horse meat specialty vendor. The Joa Course, booked in advance at 39,000 won per person (78,000 won for two), runs through horse meat extract broth, sashimi, yukhoe, sushi, mak-kkas (crispy fried cutlet), galbijjim (braised short ribs), grilled meat and shabu-shabu finished with kalguksu noodles, with no gamey smell and a lighter taste than Korean beef. Marijoa makes an easy Jungmun lunch even for first-time horse meat eaters, and the course is the way to start.

The writer ordered the king grilled tilefish with abalone hot-pot rice set for 30,000 won and the fatty grilled mackerel with abalone hot-pot rice set for 18,000 won, then added the 16-dish self-serve bar, unlimited stir-fried pork and japchae, Hallasan makgeolli and citrus makgeolli. With a lot that takes large tour buses and a 3,500-pyeong garden, Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is an easy pick for family and group meals.

Aewol pork noodle breakfast with dombe suyuk, Jeju: Handam Guksu

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is a gogi-guksu (pork noodle soup) restaurant right in front of Handam Beach in Aewol, Jeju, where every seat faces the ocean. A Naver Reservation meant walking in with no wait for 10,000-won bone-broth pork noodle soup, 10,000-won mountain-pile bibim noodles and dombe suyuk (sliced boiled pork), with self-serve radish pickles and kimchi on the side. Baby chairs and one hour of free parking made Handam Guksu an easy first meal of the Jeju trip.

Yeondong, Jeju beef restaurant with parking out front: Dolgyeok Hanwoo

Dolgyeok Hanwoo is a 1++ hanwoo (Korean beef) restaurant on Nuwemaru Street in Yeondong, Jeju City, about 10 minutes by car from Jeju Airport. On a daytime visit I ordered three servings of 1++ hanwoo galbisal (300g, 27,000 won per 100g), served as a blend of rib finger, flap meat and top blade cut from a whole short rib, so each cut could be compared bite by bite. With 4–5 parking spaces right in front, Dolgyeok Hanwoo works well for the first or last meal of a Jeju trip.
