Seongsu café with thermal photo prints and a marshmallow cookie: LOOOP

LOOOP Bakery is a four-floor bakery café on Yeonmujang 5-gil, near Seongsu Station Exit 4 in Seongdong, Seoul. At LOOOP Bakery we had an Americano brewed with a bean of our choice and a Lutos cookie filled with chocolate chips and marshmallow, then toured the thermal-paper photo print corner, the free 3rd-floor self-studio and the 4th-floor signature photo spot. LOOOP Bakery is a good Seongsu café to stop by when you want dessert and photos with a friend.

Gyukatsu first-timer near Seongsu Station picks striploin: Gyuen Dang

Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch is a Japanese-style gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building in an alley near Exit 3 of Seongsu Station in Seongdong, Seoul. Having never tried gyukatsu, the writer was about to order omurice but took a friend's advice and ordered the striploin gyukatsu (₩19,000) and a small Kirin draft beer (₩4,000), grilling the beef on a tabletop grill and switching between wasabi, salt and butter. For a gyukatsu beginner, Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch's tabletop grilling and range of accompaniments made for a memorable first taste.

Hyehwa Korean pub by the open kitchen: yukhoe gimbap, Hyehwahwa

Hyehwahwa is a fusion Korean pub on the second floor, tucked down an alley in Hyehwa, Jongno, Seoul. Seated facing the open kitchen, the writer had the signature flame-grilled gopchang bomb spicy hotpot (beef intestine hotpot) with extra glass noodles. The writer also had premium Korean beef yukhoe (beef tartare) with aged-kimchi egg gimbap and a free dessert from the Naver review event. Hyehwahwa is a good spot for Korean drinking food, whether as a first-round dinner with drinks or a second or third round.

Korean restaurant near Jungangno Station, Daegu: mackerel rice 3 ways

Hyangtaek Daegu Jongno Branch is a hanok-style Korean restaurant in Jongno, Jung-gu, Daegu, across from Starbucks Jongno Gotaek. On a solo visit, the writer ordered mackerel gondre rice (rice with Korean thistle, 14,000 won) and hanpan beoseot (a mushroom side, 6,000 won). The writer ate the rice three ways: mixed, with gopchang gim (thin, crisp seaweed) and seasoned salted seafood (bibim jeotgal), and with the house special sauce. Hyangtaek Daegu Jongno Branch is an easy, unfussy spot for a light Korean meal on your own.

Hamdeok black pork restaurant, 300-hour aged Jocha Set: Jeju Samchun

Jeju Samchun is a black pork grill restaurant on Sinbuk-ro in Jocheon-eup, an easy walk from Hamdeok Beach on Jeju Island. The Jocha Set costs 60,000 won and brings pork neck and pork belly that are aged 300 hours at low temperature, smoked over grapevine wood, and grilled at the table by staff, served with ssamjang, salt, shiitake wasabi, breadcrumb salt and jeotgal (salted seafood). The pork at Jeju Samchun tasted good enough with nothing but a dip in salt.

Jongno 3-ga bakery lets in one group at a time: 5-bread haul, Munhwa

Munhwa Bakery is a hanok-style bakery in Jongno, Seoul, a 2-minute walk from Exit 7 of Jongno 3-ga Station toward Changdeokgung Palace. Because the shop is small, Munhwa Bakery limits entry to one group at a time, which made browsing calm, and the takeout haul came to five breads: garlic bread ₩6,800, coffee bread ₩5,800, sweet potato bread ₩3,800, milk cream bread ₩3,500 and injeolmi (rice cake) bread ₩3,500. Of the five, the milk cream bread was the clear top pick.
