Aewol, Jeju hangover soup spot with no offal smell: Aewol Eomma
In short
Aewol Eomma (애월엄마) is a haejangguk (Korean hangover soup) restaurant on the Ilju-seo-ro roadside in Aewol-eup, Jeju. A 12-year Jeju resident who used to make the rounds of Sanji, Eunhuine and Mimi Haejangguk ordered 1 Aewol Eomma hangover soup, 2 beef radish soups and 2 eggs. The writer changed their personal number one because the brisket, tripe and intestines were generous, yet the soup had no offal smell at all. Served neatly in Le Creuset pots and ceramic bowls, Aewol Eomma is a great place for breakfast in Aewol.

The deep, carefully made flavor of hangover soup simmered in a Le Creuset pot: that's Aewol Eomma.
The day my number one Jeju hangover soup changed. Aewol Eomma's soup was different~

Why a 12-Year Jeju Local Changed Their Number One Hangover Soup
Aewol Eomma is a hangover soup (haejangguk) restaurant on the roadside in Aewol-eup, Jeju, and it's the place that knocked my longtime favorite off the top spot yesterday. I've lived in Jeju for 12 years, and my undisputed number one had always been Sanji Haejangguk, with Eunheui-ne and Mimi Haejangguk rounding out my top three.
Jeju has so many hangover soup places, with all kinds of different flavors. Every one of them is above average and has its own character, so choosing between them is part of the fun.

But after eating Aewol Eomma's hangover soup yesterday, my ranking flipped, haha. It's a genuinely great restaurant and I recommend it with confidence. It's on the roadside on the way to Aewol (Ilju-seo-ro), so it's easy to find. If you're sightseeing or staying nearby, please stop by. I'd also recommend it when you're traveling around west Jeju.
A Good Place for Breakfast in Aewol?

Aewol Eomma opens at 7am, so it's a good spot for a hearty meal at the start of your Jeju trip or before heading to the airport.

The interior is done in white and wood tones, brighter and cleaner than your typical hangover soup place.

The tables are nicely spaced, so it looks comfortable for solo diners as well as families with kids.

Parking was easy, with plenty of room right in front of the restaurant!
What Does Aewol Eomma's Hangover Soup Taste Like?

We ordered 1 Aewol Eomma hangover soup, 2 beef radish soups (soegogi-mugukk, a clear beef and radish soup) and 2 eggs.

I already loved how neat and tidy the table setting was, haha.

The soup was packed with brisket and offal like tripe and intestines. I wasn't hungry all day afterward, so I ended up unexpectedly eating once a day, haha. There's a subtle smoky, fire-grilled aroma, but it's not overly spicy or harsh, and the broth was rich and deep~

The reason I rarely order offal soup as a hangover soup is that even at pretty good places, there's sometimes that distinctive offal smell.

But Aewol Eomma's soup had no smell at all, and it was so tender and delicious! With so many different ingredients going in, the flavor was harmonious and perfectly balanced. I think I'll be coming back again.

Le Creuset Pots and Ceramic Bowls
I never imagined hangover soup served in a Le Creuset pot! From the rice bowl to the side dish plates, everything is ceramic, so it feels like you're being properly looked after. Hangover soup is usually all about eating casually, but a bowl that makes you feel this nicely treated is something else.

It was a pleasant shock, and with every side dish delicious and the soup itself perfect, I couldn't help but fall for it.
Which Dish Is Good If You're Eating with Kids?

Aewol Eomma's beef radish soup is clear and mild, homestyle cooking. The big pieces of beef were tender, and the refreshing flavor from the radish blended in nicely. Even my picky kid ate it really well, haha.

There was a generous amount of big beef pieces too, which was top-tier satisfying. If your child can't handle spicy food, or you prefer a gentle broth, the beef radish soup will likely suit you better.
Kindness as a Bonus

We ordered 2 eggs, and the owner checked how many of us there were and gave us one more warm egg as a freebie. So touching.. 🥹
Save-for-Later Checklist
- Meals available from 7am
- Beef radish soup recommended for kids
- Aewol Eomma hangover soup for a rich broth
- Private parking lot and high chairs available
- Re-check opening hours before visiting
Who It's For / Who It's Not For
I recommend it to travelers looking for a neat, Jeju-style breakfast and to families eating with children. On the other hand, if you're expecting a very spicy, punchy hangover soup or a cheap gukbap (soup with rice) style meal, it may not match your taste.

When I need breakfast in Aewol, this is a place I'd happily return to for the beef radish soup and the Aewol Eomma hangover soup. The best.
