Aewol Korean BBQ with crab doenjang jjigae lunch set: Nopo Dwaeji

Nopo Dwaeji Aewol is a black pork (heukdwaeji) restaurant on Gwakji 9-gil in Aewol-eup, Jeju, a short walk from Gwakji Beach. The 4-person lunch set came with 800g of aged black pork thick-cut meat, one crab doenjang jjigae (crab soybean paste stew) and four bowls of rice, so pork belly and shoulder were grilled together and dipped in turn in meljeot (fermented anchovy sauce), salt and wasabi. With a large parking lot and staff who grill everything for you, Nopo Dwaeji Aewol was an easy stop after a swim.

Self-serve sides, spicy bibim pork noodles in Aewol: Handam Guksu

Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is a pork noodle (gogi guksu) restaurant on Aewol-ro, right across from the Handam Coastal Trail in Aewol, Jeju. After their walk, a couple took a window seat looking out at the Aewol sea and shared one bowl of bibim gogi guksu (spicy mixed pork noodles) and one bowl of gogi guksu (pork noodles in beef-bone broth); side dishes at Handam Guksu are fully self-serve, and the noodle and pork portions were generous enough that even a big eater could not finish them. A good stop for alternating between the spicy mixed noodles and the clean, rich bone broth.

Grilled mackerel add-on at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, Seogwipo

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a Korean restaurant on Iljuseo-ro in Seogwipo, Jeju that specializes in mackerel braised with aged kimchi. The aged kimchi mackerel ssam-bap (rice with wrap vegetables) and abalone hot-pot rice set came with one big whole mackerel under the kimchi, and the extra grilled mackerel ordered on the side was thick and moist. With wrap vegetables and side dishes free to refill at the self-serve bar, Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap works well for a full family meal.
