Grilled mackerel add-on at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, Seogwipo

In short

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a Korean restaurant on Iljuseo-ro in Seogwipo, Jeju that specializes in mackerel braised with aged kimchi. The aged kimchi mackerel ssam-bap (rice with wrap vegetables) and abalone hot-pot rice set came with one big whole mackerel under the kimchi, and the extra grilled mackerel ordered on the side was thick and moist. With wrap vegetables and side dishes free to refill at the self-serve bar, Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap works well for a full family meal.

Where is Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, and what are the hours?

Anyone who's been to Jungmun, Jeju has probably heard raves telling you to visit this place. From the generous portions to the ssam vegetables and hot-pot rice, it was a great meal for the whole family — let me introduce it. :)

How big is the restaurant, and how long is the wait?

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is housed in a fairly large building with plenty of space, so it's more than enough for family visits. Since it draws so many customers, there's also an annex space set up to the side.

Walking inside, the spacious hall was nearly full of diners. Even with a considerable number of tables, it was hard to find an empty seat during mealtime — you could really feel how popular this place is.

During busy hours, waiting can happen, so you can check the number of people waiting via CatchTable. Even on a weekday visit there were people waiting, which made me think it'd be smart to arrive with some extra time on weekends or during lunch peak hours.

How does the self-serve wrap vegetable bar work?

There's also a self-serve bar set up on one side of Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap. It was convenient not having to ask staff for more side dishes — you could just grab as much as you needed yourself.

What especially caught my eye at the self-serve bar was the variety of ssam vegetables. True to the restaurant's name — mackerel ssam-bap — plenty of fresh vegetables were on hand, so you could pick whichever suited your taste.

What we ordered at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap was the old kimchi mackerel ssam-bap plus abalone hot-pot rice set, with a grilled mackerel added on top. The spread was so generous that one photo couldn't capture it all, so I recorded a video too.

With the old kimchi mackerel in the center and hot-pot rice, various side dishes, and grilled mackerel arranged around it, it really felt like a proper Korean meal during a Jeju trip.

Mackerel braised with aged kimchi

The old kimchi braised mackerel was perfect for a Seogwipo breakfast. Lifting the kimchi aside revealed one whole, large mackerel tucked inside.

I spread out a well-fermented piece of old kimchi and laid a thick piece of mackerel on top before taking a bite — the tangy, salty flavor of the kimchi met the mackerel's savory richness so well that it was delicious even without rice.

You can't skip piling the mackerel and old kimchi onto warm rice either. Total rice-stealer — haha!

This time I tried wrapping rice, old kimchi, and mackerel in cabbage as a ssam. The cabbage's subtle sweetness softened the spicy kimchi seasoning nicely, giving it a whole different flavor. There's a real pleasure in switching between the various ssam vegetables.

Was the extra grilled mackerel worth it?

Since eating just the old kimchi mackerel felt like leaving something on the table, I added grilled mackerel too. Two large mackerel came out grilled to a golden brown, looking appetizing from the outside alone.

Using chopsticks to pull off a big piece of the mackerel, the flesh was quite thick. Instead of thin and dry, it was plump and tender, with a moist texture that melted nicely in the mouth.

This is the grilled mackerel from Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, the Seogwipo breakfast spot people line up for. Just one mackerel alone felt generous enough to enjoy with rice.

The grilled mackerel is even better wrapped in seaweed (gim) with rice and mackerel flesh together — haha.

When you're eating it plain and crave something richer, dipping the mackerel flesh lightly in the sauce provided gives it a whole different flavor — it was really, really good.

The abalone hot-pot rice included in the set

The abalone hot-pot rice that comes with the set also exceeded expectations.

Lifting the lid revealed fluffy rice with abalone, and one bite showed how chewy, savory abalone paired so well with the rice.

The rice alone was tasty enough that I also tried it simply topped with fresh ssam vegetables from the self-serve bar and a bit of ssam sauce.

A walk around the grounds after the meal

On one side of Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, you could also see traces of celebrities who had visited before.

After eating so generously, rather than getting straight back in the car, I took a slow walk around the area. In Jeju, taking time to stroll and take in the scenery after a meal is part of the trip too. After a filling mackerel ssam-bap meal, a light walk settled my stomach and let me finish the meal at an easy pace.
