Gwangju bossam restaurant: garlic bossam weekend date, Kkankkanhan
In short
Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch is a jokbal and bossam restaurant near the Jeon Cheol-woo intersection in Yongbong-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju. On a weekend evening the writer and her boyfriend ordered garlic bossam (boiled pork with garlic sauce) and picked flying fish roe rice balls as the free item for a receipt review. The garlic sauce can be poured to taste, and the basic sides such as fish cake soup and steamed egg were generous. Kkankkanhan Jokbal is a Yongbong-dong bossam spot worth revisiting whenever you crave sharp yet sweet garlic bossam.

What is Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch like?
Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch (깐깐한족발, nicknamed Kkankjok) is where I ended up on a weekend evening while hunting for good bossam in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju. It was busier than I expected, so it seems to be a long-time favorite among locals!!
There is plenty of parking nearby, so I'd recommend it if you're ever around the Jeon Cheol-woo intersection. The inside is clean and the tables are spaced generously, so the mood works for a family meal or drinks with friends. Even though we went early in the evening, lots of people were already drinking!!

What side dishes come at Kkankkanhan Jokbal?
The side dishes at Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch were neat and varied: cabbage salad, seasoned dried radish strips, wrap vegetables and more. The cabbage salad was nutty and got my appetite going, and the dried radish was chewy, spicy and sweet, so I kept reaching for it. The wrap vegetables were fresh too, which made the bossam even better wrapped up.

Garlic bossam order and the review-freebie roe rice balls
What we ordered at Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch was 💕garlic bossam💕. There's a family set, a Jokbo set and honestly so many other options that I agonized, but we settled on garlic bossam.
If you write a receipt review you can pick from several free menu items, and we chose the roe rice balls (날치알주먹밥). I assumed a freebie would be small, but the portion was surprisingly generous. The flying fish roe pops as you chew, and the nutty flavor is strong, so it goes really well with bossam. (The portion was so big that the two of us ate until we were stuffed haha)

Besides the side dishes, the fish cake soup and steamed egg, served per person, were sooo good and generous, perfect as drinking snacks.

How was the garlic bossam pork at Kkankkanhan Jokbal?
The garlic bossam at Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch had a good lean-to-fat ratio, so it was moist rather than dry. When it arrived a little later, the look beat my expectations. The bossam came sliced into easy bites and piled generously, with a glossy shine that looked really appetizing.
Before pouring on the garlic sauce, I tried a piece on its own: no gamey smell at all and very soft, which I was happy with.

Is the garlic sauce spicy? You can control the amount
🔥The biggest charm of garlic bossam is, of course, the garlic seasoning.

The sharp garlic aroma wasn't overpowering and blended well with the sweetness, bringing out the flavor of the meat. I also liked that you can pour the garlic sauce on bit by bit to your own taste. (My boyfriend can't handle spice, so he found it a little hot .... haha)

I worried the strong garlic smell would be too much, but not at all. It was actually addictive, the kind you keep eating.💕 They also have garlic jokbal (pig's trotters), and now I'm curious about that too!!

I put a piece of bossam on lettuce, added garlic, dried radish and bossam kimchi, and wrapped it all into one big bite. It reminded me once again why so many people love bossam.

Why I recommend Kkankkanhan Jokbal as a Yongbong-dong bossam restaurant
My takeaway from the meal was that Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch has good menu quality, side dishes included, and sticks to the basics. The pork was boiled just right and you could tell care went into every side dish. The staff were friendly too, so the whole meal was pleasant.
If you're looking for good bossam in Yongbong-dong, I really recommend this place!! Generous garlic bossam, tasty bossam kimchi, fresh wrap vegetables and a variety of sides, with nothing lacking. 👍 Add the roe rice balls from the review event and it was an even more filling meal.
Having held its spot in Yongbong-dong for so long, it suits family gatherings, meals with friends and nights when you need drinking snacks. I'd happily come back next time I'm craving bossam. 💯
