Sundaeguk restaurant in Chuncheon for a spicy hangover gukbap set
In short
Byeongcheon Cheongnyeon Sundaeguk Gangwon University branch is a sundaeguk (Korean blood sausage soup) restaurant next to the back gate of Kangwon National University in Chuncheon. On a weekend-morning hangover visit, the writer ordered the 12,000-won gukbap set (spicy version +1,000 won), a regular sundaeguk and king dumplings. The set adds a sundae tasting plate and sliced pork head meat (pyeonyuk), so the 2,000-won difference was worth it. Verdict: for a cheap lunch or hangover meal near the back gate, get the gukbap set with king dumplings.

I went to a great-value sundaeguk (blood sausage soup) place near Gangwon University in Chuncheon, Byeongcheon Cheongnyeon Sundaeguk Gangwon University branch 🍀 We desperately needed a hangover cure on a weekend morning so my boyfriend and I rushed over.

As a self-proclaimed "gukbap couple" who loves hunting for hangover-soup spots in Chuncheon, there was no way I could skip this huge new gukbap place that opened by the university's back gate 🔥 There's no dedicated parking lot, so you have to find a spot in the alleys nearby — but being right next to the back gate makes it super accessible for students.

It looks like they're running an opening event right now — free rice plus bone broth, ₩3,000 soju, and even a Naver review event — so you should go while the deals are this good!

The vibe inside and the self-serve bar
Once you step inside Byeongcheon Cheongnyeon Sundaeguk Gangwon University branch, the space is way bigger than expected! It used to be an all-you-can-eat meat place, so the tables are spaced generously apart with no cramped feeling at all.

The self-serve bar is neatly stocked, so it was nice being able to scoop up as much of any side dish as you wanted without feeling awkward about it 👍

What we ordered 🥄

The basic side dishes at this sundaeguk place near Gangwon University's back gate are clean and simple — both the seokbakji (diced radish kimchi) and napa cabbage kimchi were the slightly fermented style! I usually don't eat well-fermented kimchi, but my boyfriend took one bite of the seokbakji and said it was so refreshing and delicious that he went back for seconds — twice hahaha.

The ₩12,000 gukbap set: worth every bit of that ₩2,000 difference
These days even a single bowl of sundaeguk runs you over ten thousand won 🥹 But here they have a "gukbap set" for 12,000 won?! Since it was only a 2,000-won difference, I ordered it without hesitation — and honestly, I think getting the set is just the better deal no matter what... 💫

I'm someone who eats sundaeguk mainly for the meat, and even the basic bowl here was packed to the brim with meat in the stone pot — so filling ✨ Seeing all those hearty ingredients made me decide I'll have to come back for the gopchang jeongol (grilled intestine hot pot) at dinner sometime.

How spicy is the spicy version, really?
You could also upgrade the gukbap set to spicy for an extra thousand won, and the spicy one was noticeably hot right away — maybe a tiny bit spicier than Shin Ramyun? I'm pretty weak with spice myself, but it wasn't unbearable.

My boyfriend ordered the regular sundaeguk, and its clear, milky broth had a strong, clean flavor that I really liked!

If you don't like spicy food, I'd recommend going with the basic clear broth and adjusting it yourself with chili paste or chili oil to taste. Every table also had perilla seed powder, pepper, and salt, which was convenient (●'◡'●)

The sundae tasting plate and head meat platter that come with the set
The tasting plate that comes with the set was so cute..! You get two pieces each of several kinds, and since it's all Byeongcheon sundae (a famous regional blood sausage), it was chewy and really delicious ㅠㅠ

Put a bit of salted shrimp on the head meat platter and eat it and... 👍 Even if you order it separately as a side, it's only 4,000 won, so it doesn't feel like a big splurge.

Getting to try each kind of sundae separately is a real hats-off to the owner (❁´◡`❁). Ordering a whole plate of sundae on its own might feel like a lot, but this satisfies that urge to try everything at once.

My boyfriend's top pick was the kimchi sundae ✨ It definitely had extra savory depth added to the Byeongcheon sundae, but I'm a classic person, so I liked the plain one best.

The king mandu is worth the wait
Honestly, I thought I'd already be stuffed just from the set... but I couldn't resist my curiosity and ended up adding king mandu (giant dumplings) too 🤤 The owner warned us the dumplings would take a bit of time, but once they arrived, the wait was completely worth it!

Four dumplings the size of a fist came out, with soft, chewy wrappers and fillings packed full. I have a small mouth, so there's absolutely no way I could fit one in one bite 🥹 I think I'll definitely order the mandu again next time.
To sum up
I'd recommend Byeongcheon Cheongnyeon Sundaeguk Gangwon University branch as a hangover-soup spot or a great-value lunch place near the university's back gate! Go with the gukbap set plus king mandu combo 🍀
