Daegu Korean restaurant: brisket herring roe noodles at Hyangtaek
In short
Hyangtaek (향택) is a tidy Korean restaurant on Dongbu-ro near Dongdaegu Station in Dong-gu, Daegu. On a weekday evening the writer ordered a favorite, Spanish mackerel gondeure rice (rice with Korean thistle, ₩14,000), and tried herring roe bibim noodles (₩13,000) for the first time. The noodles came piled with beef brisket and perilla leaves, rich and slightly sweet, and not spicy at all. With solo seats and dishes you won't tire of, Hyangtaek is a good last meal of a Daegu trip.

Even on a weekday evening, this Dongdaegu Station restaurant was packed full 🍚🥢 Luckily about two tables were still open, so we sat down!

Hyangtaek seating: tables and solo seats
Very clean interior in wood tones! There's a mix of tables for two and four, plus solo seats, so it seems like a fine spot for a solo meal too.

You can see straight into the kitchen, and it's spotless. 𖤐

The restroom is inside too, which is convenient.
Hyangtaek menu overview

As you'd expect from a Korean restaurant near Dongdaegu Station, the menu is distinctive and tidy 🤍⊹˚ There are a lot of dishes built around fresh vegetables, like mackerel gondeure rice (rice with dried gondeure greens) and chamnamul squid rice bowl, and I love that. Beyond the main dishes above, there's also a side menu of [ grilled short ribs / grilled mushrooms / grilled deodeok with mushrooms ]. 🤤 I've had the grilled mushrooms (₩5,000) before — crispy and delicious, for reference ෆ

And Hyangtaek's new menu items! Pollock yukhoe mulhoe (cold raw pollock in chilled broth) and Cheongsong-style dak-bulgogi (spicy grilled chicken) .. 😳 The mulhoe is a summer-only item, so I'm planning to try it for lunch on a hot day. 🥢
Ordering mackerel gondeure rice and herring roe noodles

▫ Mackerel gondeure rice ₩14,000 ▫ Herring roe noodles ₩13,000 ﹋﹋﹋﹋﹋﹋﹋﹋﹋﹋﹋﹋﹋﹋﹋ I always get the mackerel gondeure rice, but today I was craving noodles, so I ordered the herring roe noodles instead. (The mackerel gondeure rice is my favorite, so it's non-negotiable — I had to get one anyway •••)

Spanish mackerel gondeure rice, ₩14,000
🍚 Mackerel gondeure rice ··· ₩14,000 Rice full of fragrant gondeure greens paired with mackerel that comes already deboned ♡ I'd eaten something heavy earlier that day, so I was craving something clean, and this light, clean Korean meal totally hit the spot! It comes with doenjang soup, a soy sauce seasoning, salted seafood, pickles, and seaweed — the salted seafood and pickles were really tasty too. Wrapping it in gopchang gim (crispy seasoned seaweed) is a great combo too.
The tender mackerel, gondeure greens, and seasoned mushrooms all blend really well together. If you like it saltier, adding a bit more soy sauce works — this soy sauce is also slightly sweet, so it's genuinely delicious 📝
If you're a fan of clean Korean food, I especially recommend the mackerel gondeure rice! The portion is generous too — you'll be really full after one bowl.

Herring roe bibim noodles, ₩13,000: are they spicy?
🥢 Herring roe noodles ··· ₩13,000 This was my first time trying bibim noodles here. The menu photo matched the real thing exactly... actually the real portion felt even more generous, with the herring roe seasoning, beef brisket, and perilla leaves all piled on thick! (♥)
I was surprised by just how much brisket was in it 😳 I expected the noodles to taste light and tangy, but the brisket and perilla leaf aroma gave it a heavy, well-matched flavor! The little pops of herring roe as you chew were also great.
It looked spicy so I was worried, but it wasn't spicy at all — the seasoning leaned closer to slightly sweet. It's not a common flavor profile, so it felt refreshingly different and satisfying 𖦹.✧⋆˚
Verdict on Hyangtaek near Dongdaegu Station
Hyangtaek is a restaurant I'd recommend near Dongdaegu Station in Daegu. I'd only ever had the mackerel gondeure rice before, but the bibim noodles were so good that I'm planning to try even more menu items next time. 🤤 If you're visiting Daegu, consider ending your trip with a meal at Hyangtaek near Dongdaegu :) The dishes are the kind you won't get tired of and won't feel heavy, so I recommend it even more (♥)
