I was looking for a solo-drinking bar in Hongdae and stumbled on somewhere a bit different. I wanted to have a drink alone, but wouldn't it be awkward just walking into a bar by myself? I've hesitated over that thought before too, even when I really wanted to drink solo. This time I went to Woo Woo near Sangsu Station, and it turned out to be a place where even solo visitors naturally end up mingling with other guests — really fun. Woo Woo is a solo-drinking bar in Hongdae, a 3-minute walk from Exit 1 of Sangsu Station, at 1F, 39-12 Wausan-ro, Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It's open Monday to Friday from 20:00 to 05:00 the next day, and Saturday and Sunday from 19:00 to 05:00. Before visiting, you join a waitlist through Instagram.

Inside Woo Woo there are two large tables and one small table. The large tables fit multiple people together, and the small table felt like a good spot for a first-timer to ease in a little. A handsome staff member comes over right away and keeps chatting to help you relax. This grandma-at-heart was thrilled haha.

There are coat hooks near the entrance, so it's easy to hang up your jacket or bag. When you're drinking, bags and coats tend to pile up next to your chair, so having a dedicated spot to hang them made things much more comfortable.

Once you sit down, you check in at your seat using a QR code. Enter your seat number and the last digits of your phone number, and you're done!

Woo Woo's menu is broadly divided into cocktails, whiskey, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks. Cocktails range from basic options to strong ones, and there's also a non-alcoholic menu for people who can't drink much, so it was easy to pick something that fit my taste.

The house snack is a chicken-leg-shaped cracker, and I also ordered a cheese cracker. Ordering just one and sharing it with people around you is a great way to break the ice.

I ordered one Woo Woo cocktail and two Aa cocktails in total. I only like sweet drinks, and the Aa tasted like a slightly sweet latte — so good!!

There's also a good range of whiskeys and cocktails, so people who really know their drinks should be able to enjoy it too.

Woo Woo runs seat rotations depending on the situation — instead of staying at the seat you first sat down at, if someone requests a rotation, seats swap and you get to talk to new people. Moving seats and naturally meeting new people made the awkwardness disappear faster than I expected.

On top of that, there are quests set up, and apparently clearing each one earns you a free drink. Free booze for completing a mission? Obviously had to do it.

I got these two plus one more as freebies — I ordered 3 drinks and ended up drinking 3 more for free. With games and quests sprinkled in, time flew by much faster than just sitting and drinking.

Honestly, I don't often eat or drink alone, so at first going by myself felt a little scary — I wondered, 'will I be able to fit in okay?' But once I actually went, it wasn't the quiet solo-drinking bar I'd imagined; instead everyone was talking and playing games together.

It was awkward at first, but the staff talked to me first, and once I sat down, the people next to me struck up conversation too, so I settled in quickly! There's also a report button in case anyone makes you uncomfortable, which made me feel like the place is actively managed — that was reassuring too.

What surprised me most is that I'm still in touch as friends with the older sister and brother I met that very night! If you're like me — you want to try drinking solo but don't want to be completely alone, or you'd like to meet new friends — this place is worth a try. I had way more fun than I expected.
