In short
Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip (속초황금물회횟집) is a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) and raw fish restaurant inside Jungang Market in Sokcho, Gangwon, and every menu item can be packed to go. On a trip with friends, the writer took mulhoe home in a yellow shopping bag, with the mulhoe, buckwheat noodles and canned broth neatly packed separately and plenty of vegetables and raw fish. Why I looked for market mulhoe on my Sokcho trip
Our meal for this Sokcho trip was the mulhoe (spicy cold raw fish soup) from Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip (속초황금물회횟집) in Sokcho Jungang Market. My carpool crew loves traveling all over the country, and this time we came to Gangwon-do, where the seaside is gorgeous. This trip's destination: Sokcho!

And the one place you have to go in Sokcho is Jungang Market! There's so much delicious food just lying around, haha. And what you eat there is, of course, mulhoe. How could you resist a cold bowl of mulhoe in summer?

The place I went today is Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip. The fresh seafood wriggling around caught my eye.

Can you get a single serving of mulhoe to go at Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip?
Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip packs every menu item to go, and they'll pack even just one mulhoe. At Sokcho Jungang Market I wanted to eat this and that, lol, so I wondered whether I could take just one mulhoe, and since a single order gets packed, it was really easy to use.

While waiting I looked at the fish, and there were lots of customers inside. For a moment we thought about eating inside where it's cool, but we wanted to pair the mulhoe with the other food we'd already picked up, so takeout it was!

What's in the yellow-bag mulhoe takeout set
The mulhoe takeout from Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip comes in a cute yellow shopping bag. They say they specialize in takeout, and you can see the packaging is already different, haha. They tuck everything neatly into a really cute yellow bag. Since it's takeout from a market, I figured they'd just use a plastic bag, but a cute bag like this feels more upscale and put me in a good mood the moment I arrived, haha.

The set is a plate of mulhoe, buckwheat noodles, and broth. At first I panicked, thinking, wait, where's the broth? lol, and then it turned out the can is the broth. To pack a can this neatly, yep, they've earned the takeout-specialist title.

Inside there's a heap of vegetables and fresh raw fish. For me, lots of veggies in mulhoe makes the texture better and feels a bit healthier, and they put in plenty without skimping, so I was happy before I even ate. Personally, I never go back to a mulhoe place that skimps on vegetables.
How did the mulhoe at Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip taste?
Pour in the canned broth and you get a spicy, tangy-sweet Sokcho mulhoe. Broth going in!! I pour it in with a satisfying glug. The dish is finished with one pour of broth, so I was so eager to eat my heart was pounding.

Ahh, this is the look mulhoe should have. Sokcho mulhoe finished with a spicy, tangy-sweet broth. The tangy-sweet broth really woke up my appetite, haha. Moderately spicy and punchy, a perfect balance.

On a trip, I think one meal has to be mulhoe. A cold bowl of mulhoe was just right in the hot weather. The seafood was more generous than I expected, which I loved. The raw fish was fresh, and I could taste the sea with the first bite><. Today my mouth is the East Coast, and my mouth is Sokcho itself.

Mulhoe with buckwheat noodles instead of somyeon
The mulhoe at Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip comes with buckwheat noodles, not somyeon (thin wheat noodles). With noodles in it, it was really filling as a meal. I've usually had mulhoe with somyeon, but here they uniquely give buckwheat noodles. It somehow feels healthier, so my talk-only diet was satisfied too. Anyway, this mulhoe tasted like I'd want to stir rice into it at the end, lol. If I'd been at home, I totally would have!!

Now I get why people seek it out as a Sokcho mulhoe go-to!! There's a reason not only tourists but locals come too. It's the kind of dish anyone can enjoy without any fuss.

The amount of raw fish was generous too, so I ate to the end with no regrets, haha (it's not easy to say that about mulhoe, you know). If you like fresh seafood, you'll be happy here!! On a trip, spicy mulhoe with noodles was comforting and filling. Seeing the Sokcho sea and then eating mulhoe really made it feel like a trip><
Why I recommend mulhoe takeout alongside greasy market food
If you've bought greasy food like jeon (savory pancakes) or fried snacks at Sokcho Jungang Market, taking one mulhoe from Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip to go with it cuts the richness. The Hwanggeum mulhoe, which is even more generous in person than in the photos, surprised me, and before I knew it I'd nearly emptied the bowl. What I personally liked: at the market you end up ordering lots of jeon, fried food, and other oily dishes, and bringing one mulhoe along worked great for washing away the greasiness. To you foodies heading to Sokcho, I recommend balancing your food well and packing a mulhoe too!!
It's in Jungang Market, so it's easy for tourists to stop by on a trip, and the mulhoe portion is generous, so locals can enjoy it too!! June is almost over already, sob, and soon the sweltering July and August summer arrives, so if you're wondering what to eat to beat the heat, I recommend Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip in Sokcho Jungang Market.
