Jonggak sashimi restaurant for a date lunch: crab roe stew, Suksseong
In short
Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch is an aged sashimi and seasonal seafood restaurant in the Jongno food alley near Jonggak Station, Seoul. Before an autumn date in Ikseon-dong, two people shared a small plate of aged amberjack sashimi, red crab innards cream croquettes and crab roe stew; the amberjack was plump and rich even early in the season, and even a diner who doesn't usually enjoy stews kept going back for the crab roe stew broth. With partitioned, curtained tables, Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch is a good pick for a date or a group dinner.

Before heading to Ikseon-dong for an autumn date, we stopped at a Jongno sashimi spot near Jonggak Station where you can enjoy aged sashimi: "Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch"!

You probably think freshness is what matters most for sashimi, but I heard the taste also depends on how the fish is prepared and aged. Suksseong Susan gets live fish delivered directly, fully drains the blood, then ages it at low temperature to bring out a deep savory flavor, or so they say! I was really looking forward to it before we went, haha.

It sits right in the middle of the Jongno eating alley, so it looked perfect for office team dinners too.

It's right across from the Red Button building, on the 3rd floor!
Inside Suksseong Susan: good seating for a date?
The tables are separated by partitions, so it looked great for a private meal, team dinner or date. You can even draw a curtain, which made it wonderfully quiet to eat, haha.
There's moody lighting too, so we had a meal with a nice atmosphere!

There are seats for groups of 2, 4, 6 and more, and the inside is really spacious, so it seemed ideal for a big company dinner. There's a fish tank too, haha.
Suksseong Susan menu and what two of us ordered

The menu was really varied!

Besides à la carte dishes and aged sashimi, there's a separate lunch menu, so there were lots of choices.
The two of us ordered a small daebang (large amberjack) sashimi plate, crab roe stew and red crab innards cream croquettes! It wasn't properly cold yet, so I didn't expect amberjack to be on offer, but it was plump and delicious, haha. More details below.
Side dishes: green peas, soft tofu, mustard leaf kimchi

Suksseong Susan serves green peas, soft tofu and mustard leaf kimchi as basic side dishes. All three were clean and tasty. The soft tofu got my appetite going, haha, and the mustard leaf kimchi went well with the amberjack sashimi!
Early-autumn aged amberjack sashimi (small): how was it?

The aged amberjack sashimi came out first! It was the dish I was most looking forward to. They say Suksseong Susan gets live fish delivered directly and takes care over the preparation and aging too.

Maybe that's why it looks so incredible, doesn't it? 😭

The flesh was very plump and rich, so good! The chewy texture was great too, so we kept reaching for more.
Dipping it deep in the accompanying oil sauce and wrapping it in seaweed with radish sprouts, wasabi and kimchi was seriously delicious...

I didn't think it was amberjack season yet, but we really enjoyed it, haha.

What do the red crab innards cream croquettes taste like?
Next came the red crab innards cream croquettes. The crust was super crisp, and it paired neatly with the sauce.
It was even better eaten with the fried shishito peppers and the cabbage underneath!!

The red crab innards cream inside was so smooth and rich in savory flavor 😭😭

Overall it was tasty and clean-tasting 🐰

Even if you don't like stews: Suksseong Susan's crab roe stew
The last dish was the crab roe stew! Suksseong Susan's version had 5 or more meaty crabs, plus plenty of mussels, pollock roe and milt.

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of roe stew, crab stew or spicy fish stew (maeuntang) and that kind of thing. But this crab roe stew smelled different the moment it arrived;;; (no exaggeration). It smelled so good that I got a bit excited, lol.
It passed on looks alone..
There were 5+ meaty crabs, and the mussels, pollock roe and milt were generous! Above all, the broth was so good that I kept spooning it up, haha.

We loaded up on protein and carbs with the sashimi and croquettes, then finished clean with the cool, refreshing crab roe stew!! A successful lunch, haha.
Verdict: who should go to Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch?

Suksseong Susan Jongno Main Branch is great for a date, and also for a private small or large dinner with coworkers! The seafood like aged sashimi, and even sides like the croquettes, were all delicious, so I'd love to come back for dinner and try other dishes, haha.
