Sokcho sashimi takeout for 3 big eaters with corn dongdongju: Hoega

In short

Hoega is a sashimi restaurant on Beonyeong-ro 43beon-gil in Gyodong, Sokcho, with a strong local following and both takeout and delivery. On a Sokcho trip with a baby, the group took away a small mixed sashimi platter for ₩43,000 and mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) for ₩17,000 to eat at their accommodation, and three big-eating adults ate their fill alongside chulleongju (corn makgeolli) bought at Jungang Market. Hoega's small platter is as generous as a medium elsewhere and the cuts are thick, making it a good-value sashimi takeout pick in Sokcho.

Mixed sashimi and mulhoe set up at the accommodation after takeout from Hoega in Sokcho

A sashimi restaurant recommended by Sokcho locals Thick, super-fresh cuts / generous portions / great prices My review of the mixed sashimi (small) and mulhoe I got to go from < Hoega > and ate back at our accommodation!

What we ordered for takeout at Hoega and what it cost

At Hoega in Sokcho, I ordered two things to go: mixed sashimi (small) for ₩43,000 and mulhoe for ₩17,000. Three big eaters ate fresh sashimi to our hearts' content from these two orders at this great-value Sokcho sashimi spot 😊❤️

Raw fish and seafood are a must on a Sokcho trip, and my friends and I love them. Since we were traveling with a baby, we decided to eat dinner back at our accommodation, so I searched and searched for "Sokcho sashimi takeout restaurant" and found this place recommended by locals — ordered takeout right away! It's also close to Sokcho Jungang Market, so I'd recommend it as a sashimi takeout spot near there too.

I placed my takeout order 30 minutes ahead and then went to pick it up. I thought Hoega specialized in sashimi takeout, but inside, locals were gathered in small groups enjoying sashimi with drinks, and the tables were nearly full. There's clearly a reason it's known as a local favorite!

Inside Hoega, busy with takeout and delivery orders

Hoega, this Sokcho sashimi takeout favorite, takes orders until 10:30 PM. When I arrived, the place was buzzing with delivery and takeout orders — a sign of just how popular this Sokcho takeout sashimi spot is!

The mixed sashimi at Hoega is made up of flounder, rockfish, marbled sole, and Ibaengi (yellowtail) — all popular, crowd-pleasing fish. They say they use seasonal fish caught in the East Sea, and you could really tell the ingredients were high quality when you tasted it. The texture of the fish was firm and the color was vivid, so it felt fresh from the moment you looked at it!

What comes in Hoega's small mixed sashimi takeout set

Full spread of Hoega's mixed sashimi (small) takeout set

Let's take a look at what's included in Hoega's takeout sashimi set! I was surprised by how generous the portion was, and I was also amazed at how carefully it was packed — even after time had passed, the sashimi hadn't shifted or fallen apart at all.

Chojang (vinegared chili sauce) / soy sauce / ssamjang (dipping paste) / sushi rice / mukeunji (aged kimchi) / seaweed / cherry tomatoes. There were various sauces for dipping the sashimi, and as someone who loves mukeunji, I was thrilled with how generously they gave it. Getting sushi rice included was great too. The owner of Hoega really seems very generous — you can tell just from the takeout setup.

Fresh wasabi / dried radish strips / pickled radish (rakkyo) / pickled ginger / radish sprouts / garlic / chili peppers. All the accompaniments were arranged in separate small dishes so they wouldn't mix together, and the wasabi was the good, fresh kind, so I could really enjoy the sashimi.

Takeout wrapping greens with lettuce, perilla leaves, and cheongyang chili peppers

Wrapping greens (lettuce, perilla leaves) / chili peppers. As someone who loves wrapping my sashimi, I love a sashimi restaurant that gives you both lettuce and perilla leaves. The greens were completely fresh with no wilted parts, and they even included cheongyang chili peppers.

Hoega's thick, slightly sweet mixed sashimi

Opened container of Hoega's mixed sashimi (small) takeout

Back at our accommodation, when I opened the container, my first thought was, "Wow, this place's sashimi quality and portion size are incredible...?" Usually when you order the small size at other sashimi restaurants, it's just enough for two people to eat comfortably, but here, the small mixed sashimi felt as generous as a medium or even a small-large size elsewhere. I checked the price tag again just to make sure (seriously amazing). That's why I'd highly recommend it as a great-value sashimi spot in Sokcho — given today's prices, it's hard to find this much food for this price anywhere. And on top of that, the thick, chewy quality of the sashimi was the best part.

Freshness is probably the most important factor in determining how good sashimi tastes, and Hoega's mixed sashimi was excellent on that front too. There wasn't even a hint of fishy smell — instead, the clean, natural sweetness unique to fresh fish came through, and all three of us big raw-fish-loving eaters were full of praise.

Hoega's mixed sashimi, generous in both quantity and freshness

When you eat sashimi in Sokcho or other tourist areas, sometimes the portions are big but the freshness leaves something to be desired — this place felt like it nailed both quantity and quality. On top of that, the fish was sliced quite thick, so the chewy texture in your mouth was really satisfying.

Mixed sashimi enjoyed with makgeolli bought at Sokcho Jungang Market

That day we ate our mixed sashimi with Chul렁 Bridge makgeolli (corn dongdongju) we bought at Sokcho Jungang Market... and it was so sweet, honestly...

Hoega's mulhoe with icy broth and abalone on top

Hoega's mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) costs ₩17,000, and they give you the icy broth in a plastic bottle, which was really convenient and nice. It comes with somyeon (thin wheat noodles), which are a must for mulhoe.

The tangy, sweet, refreshingly cold broth was especially perfect for the hot weather, and the mulhoe was loaded with sashimi... haha. On top of that, they were generous enough to add abalone sashimi on top... Hoega's mulhoe is seriously delicious.

The broth flavor wasn't overpoweringly strong, so I could eat it all the way through without getting sick of it, and since Hoega slices the fish fresh to order for dishes like mulhoe and hoedeopbap (raw fish rice bowl), the sashimi was fresh and delicious.

How thick Hoega's sashimi is cut and how to eat it

The sashimi at Hoega in Sokcho was seriously thick. Instead of thin slices, each piece was cut generously thick, and the chewy texture when you bit into it was just... wow. It had a bouncy, chewy feel in the mouth, and the more you chewed, the more the natural flavor of the fish came through. If you love thick-cut sashimi, you'd love this even more. There was real enjoyment in eating sashimi with such a lively texture, and just one piece filled your mouth with sweetness, haha.

There's a way I really love eating sashimi... Hoega carefully included seaweed and perilla leaves for wraps, so I could enjoy the fresh Sokcho sashimi in a variety of ways.

Enjoying Hoega's takeout sashimi with aged kimchi

Was the small mixed platter enough for three adults?

Our group was two guys and one girl, all good eaters, and even though we only got the small mixed sashimi, the amount was truly generous. Honestly, given the composition and quantity, I found myself thinking, "Is there even any profit margin selling it like this?" — it was that abundant, and the sashimi quality was so good that it's one of the best places we ate at during our whole Sokcho trip!
