Asan galbi house, yellow pot rice with beef ribs: Dongbaek Seokgalbi
In short
Dongbaek Seokgalbi (동백석갈비) is a charcoal-grilled seokgalbi (ribs served on a hot stone plate) restaurant serving full Korean set meals on Chungmuro in Asan, Chungnam. After a trip around Asan, the writer booked ahead and ordered the weekday lunch Dongbaek beef galbi with the rice swapped for pot rice (sotbap). The charcoal beef ribs stayed warm and the doenjang stew mixed into the yellow pot rice stood out. Dongbaek Seokgalbi is a good Asan pick for a neat Korean set meal with your parents.

After a trip around Asan: how was the weekday lunch at Dongbaek Seokgalbi?
I went to Dongbaek Seokgalbi (동백석갈비, "Dongbaek") while looking for a good place to eat after a trip around Asan. I reserved ahead. They showed us to our table at the reserved time, and the side dishes were already set out, so we could start eating as soon as we ordered the main dish.

From the weekday lunch menu I ordered the Dongbaek beef ribs and changed the rice to pot rice. Everything came out neatly arranged, and I was in a good mood the whole meal.

The beef ribs I could eat warm and the doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) was so good I still remember it. If you are looking for a place to eat in Asan, it is worth a look.
Dongbaek Seokgalbi interior: clean and comfortable

The first thing I noticed at the Asan restaurant was how clean and tidy it was. The tables were spaced comfortably, and you could see both the grilling area and the kitchen.

The kitchen has clear glass windows, so you can watch the food being prepared. Seeing where the food is made made me trust it even more. The inside is kept clean, so it was a comfortable meal.
The staff and the owner were really friendly too, so even on my first visit I started the meal in a good mood. There is also a separate private room, which looked fine for family gatherings or group meetings.
Weekday lunch Dongbaek beef ribs: a neatly set table

What I ordered was the weekday lunch Dongbaek beef ribs. The side dishes were already on the table, and the main dish, the beef ribs, was prepared separately after I ordered.
With the beef ribs at the center and many dishes around them, the table felt full. I also liked how each dish was served neatly.

When I eat with my parents, I look at not only the taste but also the atmosphere of the place and how the meal is put together, and Dongbaek was good on those points too.

The spread is tidy and the variety is wide, so I thought it would be a good place to bring parents.
Are Dongbaek's seokgalbi ribs grilled for you?
Dongbaek's seokgalbi (charcoal-grilled marinated ribs) is carefully grilled over charcoal as soon as you order. I think it took about 10 minutes for the ribs to arrive. When they came out, the appetizing color of the ribs was the first thing I noticed.

There were onions under the ribs, and they were set over a warm flame, so the meat stayed warm while I ate. Meat can go cold as time passes, so I liked being able to keep it warm like this.
The onions went well with the ribs. I was satisfied enjoying the charcoal-grilled beef ribs warm throughout the meal.
Pot rice and doenjang stew: the most memorable dishes
At Dongbaek, once we had eaten a fair amount of meat, they brought out the pot rice and doenjang stew.

The yellowish color of the pot rice was really pretty. When I tasted it, I also noticed a subtle sweetness, which went nicely with the meat.
And the dish I personally remember most from this meal was the doenjang stew. It was clean-tasting, and I could feel the texture of each ingredient, so I enjoyed it. It is the kind of stew where the flavors of the ingredients blend well rather than a harsh, strong taste, which I liked even more.

Mixing the doenjang stew into the warm pot rice was a really good match. Even after the meat, I could have a filling meal with rice, which I liked.

The kangdoenjang (thick, concentrated doenjang), seasonal vegetables and ssam greens (leaves for wrapping) also came in several kinds, so you can eat them however you like. Not just the main dish but the rice course too was neatly prepared, so it felt like being treated to a full spread.
Dongbaek Seokgalbi menu in Asan: from weekday lunch to premium ribs

Dongbaek has a variety of dishes beyond beef ribs. On the table were separate menus for weekday lunch, weekday dinner and weekend dinner.
The signature dishes are Dongbaek premium pork galbi and Dongbaek premium beef galbi, and the weekday lunch menu has a good range too. If you visit at lunchtime, the weekday lunch menu is a good choice, and in the evening you can pick a premium galbi dish. It also seemed easy to choose according to the tastes of the people you come with.
Near Onyang Folk Museum: parking and opening hours

Dongbaek Seokgalbi in Asan has Onyang Folk Museum in front of it, so it is well placed to visit together. It is about a 10-minute walk from the museum, so it works as a place to eat after seeing the museum.

Choosing Dongbaek Seokgalbi beef ribs for a family meal in Asan
What I liked most about Dongbaek this time was that the food comes out neatly arranged. The charcoal-grilled beef ribs I could eat warm were good, but the doenjang stew I ate with the pot rice especially stuck with me. The restaurant was clean, and the staff and owner were friendly, so it was a comfortable meal.

If you are looking for a place to eat with your parents in Asan, or thinking about where to hold a family gathering, this kind of place seems like a good choice. It is close to Onyang Folk Museum, so Dongbaek was also good as a meal stop during an Asan outing. Next time I want to try other dishes.
