Couple's hot pot dinner at COEX Magok: tomato & mala broths, J's Pot

J's Pot Magok Branch is a fusion hot pot and shabu-shabu restaurant on basement level 2 of COEX Magok, near Magongnaru Station in Gangseo, Seoul. On a dinner visit, a husband and wife each ordered their own hot pot, one with tomato broth and one with mala broth, and also tried the peanut sauce from the J's Pot self-serve sauce bar and a side of orange chicken. J's Pot Magok Branch is an upscale-feeling COEX Magok restaurant where everyone can comfortably enjoy the hot pot they want.

Daejeon burger spot: 3 burgers shared without fries at Buggy's

Buggy's Gwanpyeong is a handmade burger restaurant on the first floor of DTBNS Building C, Tekeunojungang-ro, Gwanpyeong-dong, Yuseong, Daejeon. Even at 2 p.m. Buggy's Gwanpyeong was almost full, and the writer and her husband shared three burgers ordered on their own without fries (the Godfather, Double Cheese and Mushroom), each with a clearly distinct character. Buggy's Gwanpyeong is a good fit if you want handmade burgers with personality that taste nothing like the franchise chains.

Fish restaurant by Incheon Grand Park: 6-fish mixed grill for 3

Sorae-san Hwadeok Saengseon Gui is a clay-oven grilled fish restaurant in Manuigol, near the east gate of Incheon Grand Park in Namdong, Incheon. After a walk in Incheon Grand Park, the writer and their parents shared the mixed grill for 3. It came with six fish (flatfish, hairtail, Atka mackerel, mackerel, baekdae and Spanish mackerel), one stew per person and bean-and-sweet-potato stone pot rice, and they left full. For a hearty family meal with parents after a day at Incheon Grand Park, Sorae-san Hwadeok Saengseon Gui is a good fit.

Magok Korean BBQ after Seoul Botanic Park: yukhoe ssam, Chadol Grill

Chadol Grill Magok (차돌그릴 마곡) is a beef brisket (chadolbaegi) Korean BBQ restaurant in Magok, Gangseo-gu, Seoul, about 5 minutes by car from Seoul Botanic Park. After a morning at Seoul Botanic Park, the writer and her husband had lunch at Chadol Grill Magok, ordering Hanwoo++ brisket yukhoe ssam, Hanwoo++ brisket samhap, perilla oil makguksu and brisket doenjang rice pot. Both named Chadol Grill Magok the tastiest Korean BBQ restaurant they had visited recently.

Beef restaurant in Incheon with grilled vegetable wraps: Dodanga Guwol

Dodanga Guwol Main Branch (도단가 구월본점) is a beef restaurant with private rooms near Yesulhoegwan Station in Incheon that specializes in Australian wagyu. Hitsumabushi restaurant in Yeoksam: walk-in couple dinner, Unagiwa

Unagiwa (우나기와) is a Japanese restaurant specializing in hitsumabushi (grilled eel over rice), on the 2nd floor of a building a 3-minute walk from Yeoksam Station in Gangnam, Seoul. The writer and her husband walked in without a reservation and each ordered the Hitsumabushi Sang (38,000 won per person), topped with one whole antibiotic-free, flame-grilled eel; the chawanmushi, tea and side condiments, plus the fun of eating it four different ways, all impressed them. Unagiwa is a Yeoksam Japanese restaurant that suits dates, dinners with parents, business entertaining and team dinners alike.

Magok Japanese restaurant, karaage don a fried-food hater loved: Ilpum

Ilpum Magok (일품 마곡점) is a kaisendon (Japanese seafood rice bowl) restaurant on the ground floor along Gonghang-daero in Gangseo, Seoul, a 7-minute walk from Magok Station. The writer, a kaisendon lover, ordered the 37,000 won premium kaisendon, her husband chose the karaage don (Japanese fried chicken rice bowl), and they added futomaki (thick sushi roll). Although she dislikes fried food, Ilpum Magok's karaage don surprised her, and the premium kaisendon became the best kaisendon of her life.

Incheon Korean restaurant with private rooms for parents: Jeonbokchon

Jeonbokchon Guwol (전복촌 구월) is an abalone Korean set-meal restaurant with private rooms in Namdong, Incheon, between Yesulhoegwan Station and City Hall Station. The writer booked a private room with their parents and ordered the Bon set (29,000 won per person) for 3: a course running from abalone porridge, yuja-scented vinegared raw abalone (jeonbok chohoe) and steamed abalone to raw fish, perilla abalone seaweed soup and plum tea. With quiet rooms and a wide price range, Jeonbokchon is worth considering for family gatherings or a parent's birthday meal.
