Chili con carne set for two at a Gunja jazz bar: Kick Ass Jazz Club

This is a self-paid review of a night out with my partner, our first in a while, somewhere with great atmosphere, tasty bar food and a beer or two. I was searching near Gunja Station for a place with both a soft, moody vibe and good food, and found this one, a Gunja bar famous as a lovely cocktail bar: Kick Ass Jazz Club (킥애즈재즈클럽).

Is the Kick Ass Jazz Club atmosphere good for a date?

Kick Ass Jazz Club is a hideout-style Gunja bar with a neon sign, heavy wood-toned interior and soft lighting. The moment we walked in, the hip neon sign and the warm, weighty wood tones caught our eye. Lots of whiskeys and bottles were neatly displayed behind the bar counter, giving it a properly professional cocktail bar feel. The soft, cozy lighting made the whole place romantic, which made it the perfect space for a quiet chat as a couple. For a special day or a date course, I wondered if there could be a better Gunja bar than this.

The two-person set (Budweiser set) at Kick Ass Jazz Club includes 1 plate, 1 dish and 2 Budweiser draft beers. While looking over the menu, we thought it was a solid deal, so we ordered it.

Once we ordered, the first things to arrive were the free snack, fragrant popcorn, and cold Budweiser draft beer. The crispy, salty popcorn was the kind you can't stop eating once you start, and the soft foam and refreshing fizz of freshly poured Budweiser wiped away the day's fatigue. By the way, there was also a sign on the table for a Naver receipt review event, so if you visit, I recommend joining in to get a free glass of beer!

How do the pastry pepperoni pizza and chili con carne stew taste?

The pastry pepperoni pizza and chili con carne stew we picked as the set's mains were a combo where crunch and rich flavor went well together. A little while later both dishes came out together, and they looked so good they made our mouths water.

Pastry pepperoni pizza, crisp in layers

The pastry pepperoni pizza was what I was looking forward to most, and from the first bite I couldn't help exclaiming. It isn't made with ordinary flour dough but with a crisp pastry dough that pulls apart in layers, and the texture was truly art! The salty pepperoni and melted, nutty cheese blended with the crisp, rich pastry, making it a great match for beer. Eating it with the hot sauce and grated Parmesan served on the side brought out even more flavor.

Chili con carne stew on garlic baguette

The chili con carne stew that came with it had minced meat, beans and a gentle spice flavor that came through richly, giving it a deep, hearty taste. A little cheese and cilantro on top added flavor, and it came with crisply toasted garlic baguette slices; piling the stew on top filled my mouth with richness and savory depth. The pizza's crunch and the stew's filling, rich taste were a perfect pairing.

We went into Kick Ass Jazz Club at 6 p.m., and after 9 it was totally full, with a waitlist too...!!! A popular spot!! If you want to sit comfortably on a date, an early evening visit looks best.

Tasty bar food, cold beer, and stylish music and lighting: everything clicked and it was a perfect day. The dark yet warm classic vibe was great for deep conversation with my partner, and it had everything needed for a romantic time.
