I was craving a neat, hearty Korean meal for the first time in a while, so I went to Cafe Dong-i Sicheol (카페동이 시지점), a very famous restaurant near Sigi in Suseong-gu, Daegu. As everyone says, the table setting was clean, and the care and extras for customers were so abundant that I was impressed the whole meal. It's a Sinmae favorite that's already spread by word of mouth.

Where is Cafe Dong-i Sicheol and where do you park?

Cafe Dong-i Sicheol is right next to Sinmae Market, and there's a public car park near the restaurant, so you can park easily if you drive. It was a perfect route for dropping in for a meal while browsing the warm, nostalgic Sinmae Market. Even first-timers can find it quickly on a map.

In popular neighborhoods like this, parking usually stresses you out, so the public car park felt like a huge plus. I didn't have to circle around looking for a spot, and strolling over at a relaxed pace put me at ease before I'd even eaten.

In front of Cafe Dong-i Sicheol there's a spot where you can drink cold heotgae tea (hovenia tea). I was touched by the owner's kind thoughtfulness before I even opened the door. On hot days like these, or when there's a wait, the care put into keeping it cold for thirsty customers felt really warm. I walked in with a sip of cold heotgae tea, and my first impression shot way up.

What's the atmosphere inside Cafe Dong-i Sicheol?

The inside has warm, cozy lighting and a clean, uncluttered interior. The tables are spread out nicely, so it felt comfortable to eat there.

True to its word-of-mouth fame, the place was packed even though it wasn't peak time. Customers kept coming, from couples on dates to families out for a weekend meal.

What can you eat unlimited at the service bar?

At the Cafe Dong-i Sicheol service bar you can have fried eggs, multigrain rice, barley gangjeong (crispy barley snack) and seasonal tea, all unlimited. The generous service bar set up on one side of the restaurant was the biggest draw, and it made the meal much more varied and filling. This perk was seriously amazing.

In these days of high prices, it's already surprising that you can fry your own eggs and eat as many as you like, but the nutty, healthy multigrain rice, the crunchy, sweet barley gangjeong for dessert and the warm seasonal tea were all unlimited too. While waiting for the main dishes I fried my eggs and grabbed some gangjeong, so there wasn't a dull moment. The service bar was also tidied often and very clean.

What comes in the brazier jeyuk and doenjang jjigae set?

At Cafe Dong-i Sicheol I ordered the one-person brazier jeyuk bokkeum set with Dong-i doenjang jjigae, 3 side dishes and omija tea (five-flavor berry tea), and added a mini tangsuyuk on the side. I ordered conveniently on the tablet at the table. I picked a solid lineup of best-sellers, and with the unlimited fried eggs, multigrain rice and barley gangjeong from the service bar, the table was so full it nearly groaned.

When the food arrived, I actually gasped out loud. The jeyuk bokkeum comes on a one-person brazier and stays warm until the very last bite, so it was delicious from start to finish. It had a faint smoky grill flavor, and the sweet and spicy sauce soaked right into the meat. It was a total rice thief.

Adding the nutty, deep-flavored Dong-i doenjang jjigae made it a perfect, classic Korean meal. The 3 neat side dishes were seasoned just right, and the refreshing, sweet omija tea after the meal was a lovely way to cleanse the palate.

How is the mini tangsuyuk at Cafe Dong-i Sicheol?

The mini tangsuyuk I added was a real treat, crispy outside and chewy like glutinous rice inside! It seemed to be fried in clean oil, because the batter was pale and super crunchy. Biting in, the thick pork was juicy and tender, and the quality beat most Chinese restaurants. It's the kind of taste anyone, young or old, would love, truly unique for a Sinmae favorite.

Is it good value, and would I go back?

With generous portions plus unlimited rice and dessert, I felt no other place could match Cafe Dong-i Sicheol for value. Between the friendly staff, the lively atmosphere and, above all, flawless flavor from the main dishes to the service bar, I finished the meal completely satisfied.

If you want a proper, filling meal around Sigi, or a clean, good-value Korean restaurant, Cafe Dong-i Sicheol seems like a very clear answer. From the moment I walked out happily patting my full belly, I knew I'd definitely be back soon. Next time I'll bring my parents and try the other set menus. I found a truly great Sigi restaurant, and it made my day. Highly recommended!
