Gwangju Blue Ribbon café: mango cheese gelato bingsu at Maekmundong
In short
Maekmundong is a large restaurant and café in Seo-gu, Gwangju, on Mareuk-ro, with a restaurant on the 1st floor and a café lounge on the 2nd; it has held a Blue Ribbon every year from 2023 to 2026. At the 2nd-floor café, the writer ordered the fresh mango & cheese gelato bingsu (shaved milk ice) and an iced Americano, and the generous thinly sliced fresh mango and the thick, cheesecake-like cheese gelato stood out. With a large private parking lot and high ceilings, Maekmundong is an easy mango bingsu café in Gwangju for weekend dates or family outings.

When summer comes, isn't mango bingsu (Korean shaved milk ice dessert) the first dessert that pops into your head? 🥭✨ Cool milk ice piled with sweet fresh mango makes the heat just melt away. Today I visited Maekmundong, famous in Gwangju for its mango bingsu.
What is Maekmundong, the Blue Ribbon café in Gwangju?
Maekmundong is on Mareuk-ro in Seo-gu, Gwangju, and it's already well known by word of mouth as a bingsu hotspot. It has held a Blue Ribbon steadily from 2023 to 2026, so I had high expectations. 😊

Parking and waiting at Maekmundong
There's a wide parking lot in front of the building, and parking is free. Popular cafés often stress you out over parking, but Maekmundong is an easy place to visit even on weekends. On busy days you can reportedly join the waitlist ahead of time through Tabling, so keep that in mind!

Also, Maekmundong accepts Onnuri gift vouchers! 👍
Maekmundong's 1st-floor restaurant and 2nd-floor café lounge
Maekmundong has a slightly special layout: a restaurant on the 1st floor and a café lounge on the 2nd. You can have a meal and go straight on to coffee and dessert, which looked great for dates or family gatherings. There were lots of group guests, too. 😊 The building is huge with high ceilings, so it didn't feel stuffy at all the moment I walked in.

Going up to the 2nd-floor café lounge, the atmosphere was really pretty. ✨ The ceiling is high and the space is wide, so it felt wonderfully open, and the seasonal pony and hot-air balloon decorations were so cute.

It's a photogenic space, so it was fun just wandering around. There are window seats, group tables and sofa seats, so it suits dates, friends' get-togethers and family gatherings alike.

Cake showcase and drink menu at Maekmundong
The showcase next to the 2nd-floor counter had a huge variety of cake slices. Looking at it... I briefly forgot I'd come for bingsu. 😂 Every one of them looked gorgeous.

If I hadn't been having mango bingsu, I'd definitely have ordered a cake. The drinks are just as varied, with coffee, ades, teas, lattes and more, so you can pick whatever you like. Next time I'll try the cake for sure. 🍰🤍

How does Maekmundong's fresh mango & cheese gelato bingsu taste?
This time I ordered the fresh mango & cheese gelato bingsu and an iced Americano. The bingsu I'd been waiting for finally arrived! I gasped at the look of it. 😍

Thinly sliced fresh mango was generously piled on 100% milk ice, with cheese gelato in the middle. Just looking at it made me happy. Homemade mango puree comes separately, so you can pour as much as you like.

One bite and I understood right away why it's called a top mango bingsu dessert spot in Gwangju. The mango is fresh, not frozen, so the texture was very soft and juicy.

Sliced thin, it was perfect for scooping up with the milk ice, and the sweet juice filled my mouth. There was so much mango that I could have it all the way to the end, which I loved. 🥭

Mango bingsu with an iced Americano and the weekday happy hour
Sweet mango bingsu calls for an Americano, of course. ☕ After the sweet bingsu, a sip of coffee cleaned up my palate, so I kept reaching for it. I also heard Maekmundong runs a happy hour: on weekdays from 3 to 6 pm, you get 2 free Americanos with a bingsu order. Visiting at that time would be an even better deal. 👍

The best part: cheesecake-like cheese gelato
Personally, my favorite part of the Maekmundong mango bingsu was the cheese gelato. It wasn't ordinary ice cream; it had a thick, dense texture like chewing cheesecake, and the flavor was rich, nutty and sweet.
Is Maekmundong's mango bingsu worth it?
High-quality bingsu with generous fresh mango, soft milk ice and nutty cheese gelato: a really wonderful combination. 🥭🍧
