A weekday lunch of stir-fried cuttlefish for two plus the fried cuttlefish set cost 54,000 won, with plump cuttlefish, a spicy sauce and a salty, old-school fried-chicken batter, and fried rice or plain rice free at lunch. With neighborhood regulars walking in the whole time, Gapmaejeong is a genuine local favorite.

Boseung Hoegwan Cheonho Station Branch is a 24-hour gukbap (Korean soup with rice) restaurant in Gangdong, Seoul, right in front of Cheonho Station and a bus stop near Hyundai Department Store Cheonho. The parking entrance sits in the middle of the building and looks like a hotel entrance, so it takes a lap to find, but the dining room is roomy; one spicy pork jowl gukbap at 14,000 won and one solo special pork jowl gukbap at 18,000 won cover both the spicy and the plain nutty broth. Even the plain bowl comes packed with pork jowl, so for two people the single bowl plus special combination is exactly the right amount.

Saturday lunch wait at a Gangdong tonkatsu restaurant: Riae Premium

Riae Premium Olympic Park Branch is a Japanese-style tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) restaurant on Seongnae-ro 18-gil in Gangdong-gu, Seoul. On a Saturday lunch visit, a couple ordered the premium sirloin-and-tenderloin half-and-half for 22,000 won and the cold soba tenderloin set for 19,500 won, then added a black tiger shrimp for 5,000 won, and the truffle oil sauce was the best pairing. Riae Premium takes Naver and Catch Table bookings, but weekend lunch still involves a wait even with a reservation, so allow extra time.
